The "Sunshine" went out of Mary Edgecomb's life on Friday, March 7, 2014, when her husband Bob "Sunshine" died at home. The Sunshine nickname came from Bob's days as a clown for the Shrine when he enticed children of all ages with his antics and balloon creations. He even was known as a "professor of balloonology" since he taught many the art of making balloon flowers and animals.
Robert Lee Edgecomb was born in Dallas, TX, on February 28, 1938. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1956 and entered the U.S. Army. After his discharge, he went to Texas A&M University and graduated with a degree in marketing.
He was a natural salesman and, like his father, Bob began his career in the insurance industry. But he soon moved to food service sales where he worked for Swift Foods, Lott Marketing, and White Swan (now U.S. Foods). He also worked at Central Market and later as a chef for CISCO Systems.
Bob had many diverse interests. As a Mason, he was master of Sul Ross Lodge in College Station, TX. He and Mary were active members of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection where they sang in the choir and catered many meals. Bob was a lay reader, member of the lay pastoral care group and a former senior warden. Bob and Mary enjoyed traveling and went on trips all over the world, including cruises to Russia, Italy, Alaska and many more destinations. Bob's favorite passion was catering which he did for many years for weddings, rehearsal dinners, picnics, family reunions and church gatherings. Bob and Mary also raised and showed Samoyed dogs for years.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, James Edgecomb; his mother, Charleyne Edgecomb Baker; and sister, Jean Edgecomb Davis. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Mary Wade-Edgecomb, daughter Kate Reid and son-in-law Jack Reid; son Wade Classen and daughter-in-law Linda Classen and by grandchildren Zachary, Alexander and Casey Reid and Catherine and Chandler Classen.
A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 2200 Justin Lane, Austin, TX 78757, at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15. The family requests that all attending the funeral not wear black, but Hawaiian shirts and colors, Bob's favorite apparel. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Building Fund of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection.
