Dr. Dexter T. Gabbard, 86, of Katy, Texas, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2013 at Autumn Grove Cottage in Katy, TX. Dexter was born March 24, 1927 in Bryan, Texas. He graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M in 1952 and served in the U.S. Navy for two years during WWII. In 1953 he married Evelyn Carmine of Dublin, Georgia and entered private practice in Artesia, New Mexico, where he served on the Artesia City Council and was a member of the Rotary Club, Lions Club and Knife and Fork Club. In 1971 they moved to Jackson, Mississippi where he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture until his retirement in 1988. They were members of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Letcher P. Gabbard and Mildred Haggerty Gabbard of College Station, Texas; his wife, Evelyn, in 1986, and his brothers Dr. James Gabbard of Corpus Christi, TX and Dr. Bruce Gabbard of College Station, TX. He married Ruth Kolb Gabbard of Lafayette, Louisiana in 2000. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; his two daughters, Frecia Gabbard Johnson of Newport Beach, CA; Terri Gabbard Traylor (Mike) of Ridgeland, MS; four grandchildren; Chris Ransom (Laura) of Fountain Valley, CA; Kelly Bergstrom (Mike) of Apple Valley, CA; Michelle Traylor Guy (Brandon) of Ridgeland, MS; Michael Traylor (Angela) of Madison, MS; nine great-grandchildren; Anna Ransom, Julie Ransom, Lisa Ransom, Katie Bergstrom, Ashley Bergstrom, Tyler Harrison, Grayson Guy, John David Hanbery, and Drew Traylor; four step-children and families; Don Dowdle (Linda) of Weddington, NC; Mike Kolb (Susan) of Slidell, LA; Terri Lewis (Bob) of Katy, TX; Jeff Kolb (Melody) of Cumming, GA. Visitation will be at Lakewood Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson, Mississippi on Saturday, June 22, 2013 from 9:30-11:00 am followed by a graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to your favorite charity in his name.
