Michael Vogel
Michael Vogel, 24, of Westerly, R.I., beloved son of Donna and Gary Vogel, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012. He is survived by his brother Aaron.
A 2005 graduate of Westerly High School, Mike served as a U.S. Marine for six years and participated in the 2007 Troop Surge in Al-Anbar, Iraq, responsible for route clearance as a Turret-Gunner and as Armory NCOs. He left active duty as a sergeant to return
to college.
In January of 2011, he graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a B.A in political science, summa cum laude, and was named the David Warren International Relations Scholar of the Year. He was an intern within the Strategy and Policy department at
the U.S. Naval War College and the Potomac Institute for policy studies in Washington, D.C.
In 2011, Mike was the recipient of a Robertson Fellowship Scholarship, pursuing a Masters of International Affairs at Texas A&M University.
Mike leaves behind his grandmother, Sandra Lawton; his aunt and uncle, Wayne and Karen Vogel; his aunt, Barbara Lawton; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
His family will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 27 at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 9 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, corner of Elm and Broad Streets, Westerly.
Burial with full military honors will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Westerly Yacht Club, One Watch Hill Road, Westerly.
