Published: Tuesday, April 13, 2010 10:55 PM CDT (in) Wharton Journal-Spectator Tom French July 26, 1930 - April 10, 2010 Published: Tuesday, April 13, 2010 10:55 PM CDT Tom Ed French, age 79, of Wharton died Saturday, April 10, 2010 in Wharton. He was born on July 26, 1930 in Lincoln County, Ark., the son of the late Hubbard French and Ollie Mae Carter French. Mr. French has been a resident of Wharton since 1954 and was a former resident of Arkansas. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. French graduated from Monticello College in Arkansas and later graduated from Texas A & M University with a master's degree in industrial education. He taught Industrial arts for a number of years at Wharton County Junior College. Mr. French later served as an agricultural consultant and fertilizer salesman before starting his own business, F & M Sales in Wharton. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wharton and the Wharton Lions Club. Mr. French married Verna Grace Reber on March 4, 1955 in El Campo and she preceded him in death on June 30, 2002. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jay Cochran. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at First United Methodist Church in Wharton with Rev. Polly Standing and Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Frank Cochran of Wharton, Renee and Cory Crim of Austin and Annette and Stephen Frank of Klein; sister, Joy Puryear of Dumas, Ark.; grandchildren and spouse, Christie and Stuart Taylor, Briton Watkins, Stuart Watkins, Meaghan Crim, Jessica Frank and Miles Frank. Pallbearers will be: Frank Cochran, Cory Crim, Stephen Frank, Miles Frank, Briton Watkins, Stuart Watkins, Eugene Maretka and Stuart Taylor. In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, TX 77488; or the Houston Area Parkinson's Society, 2700 Southwest Fwy., Suite 296, Houston, TX 77098. Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
