I grew up in Coleman, a small town in West Texas. Although I had been to cities such as Dallas, Houston and Austin, attending Texas A&M really opened my eyes to the fact that there is a world outside of West Texas. I attended a program called Aggie on Wall Street which brings 20 students from the Mays College of Business to New York City for a three week program taught by Former Students. That experience changed my life forever. I was so impressed at how Former Students gave so unselfishly to teach students they had never met. If my donation helps change one life half as much as Texas A&M has changed mine, it will be well worth it. I hope other class members of the 90s will follow my lead and increase their giving to an institution that has positively shaped their lives.

Giving back to Texas A&M has been a priority for us since we graduated. Being Aggies has had a great personal and professional impact on our lives. We loved that at A&M while times change, the student experience stays roughly the same and we want to give back so future Aggies get to experience the same Aggie spirit we enjoyed so much.

My wife and I chose to make this gift to honor the memory of my father. Over the years, he attended many of his Class of 1947 on campus reunions, and I attended some with him. It was easy for me to see the genuine affection he felt for his classmates. As I grew up, he instilled in me the basic values of honesty and integrity he had learned at A&M. Besides providing a sound education, I believe A&M helped mold us into better men, and as the University continues to perform this service, I believe it is worth supporting financially.

College Station, TX

Charles Dewey McMullan had a lifelong affiliation with Texas A&M. Interested in architectural construction and in military services, he chose to enter the Air Force ROTC program at A&M. Through scholarships and working summer jobs, McMullan paid his way through school.

While at Texas A&M, McMullan was a Ross Volunteer. He was a distinguished student eight of his 10 semesters at A&M and was initiated into Tau Beta Pi engineering honorary society and Phi Kappa Phi national honorary society. During his senior year, he met and married the love of his life, Ann. In May 1958, he was named ROTC Distinguished Graduate and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.

McMullan’s education in architectural construction prepared him for his 21-year career in the Air Force as a civil engineer. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal.

In 1980 McMullan returned to Texas A&M as an assistant professor and then an associate professor in the Department of Construction Science. He received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1997 from The Association of Former Students and in his honor, the Charles Dewey McMullan Endowed Scholarship for construction science students was established. In December 1999, the Board of Regents bestowed the title “Associate Professor Emeritus of Construction Science.”

McMullan considered himself the luckiest guy he knew. Both McMullan and his wife retired from A&M in 1998 and McMullan said that they were richly blessed through their association with Texas A&M. They felt very fortunate to be able to return some of the resources A&M gave to them.

Charles McMullan passed away in May 2012.

Ann and I have been richly blessed through our association with Texas A&M. If asked to sum up my life in two words it would be, “Lucky me!” Seldom does a day go by that we don’t comment on how great it is to live in this area where we can take in Aggie sports, especially volleyball, football, and baseball. We also enjoy programs offered through the Bush Presidential Library. Again, we thank our lucky stars for bringing us full circle back to A&M.

I cannot express what Texas A&M means to me. I owe this great university so much for helping to make me the person I am today. The education, instruction, encouragement and examples provided me, as a very immature young man, were priceless. I want to help provide this same learning experience for future Aggies.

Paul M. Mebane ’69 graduated from Texas A&M with a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering, followed by a Masters in 1970. After graduation, Mebane was assigned to the Air Force Weapons Laboratory in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he served for four years. In 1974, Mebane went to work for ExxonMobil and spent a 32 year career in upstream project management and development planning with assignments in Houston, New Jersey, Norway, Malaysia and Qatar.

It is as if the overall Aggie “journey” is a tradition: from the first days of fish camp, to walking across the graduation stage on campus, and then continuing beyond with wearing the ring and attending Muster to bond us to one another and the university. The traditions even influence non-attending family to become close “friends of A&M” - my son, a Duke grad, is an avid Aggie sports fan. The A&M years are probably what molded me into the type of person I am today and created a bond with all other Aggies. I continue to be amazed that Aggies can walk into a crowded room anywhere in the world and spot another Aggie ring across the room.

Mendell received his Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M in 1988 and his Master of Business Administration, also from A&M, in 1995.

For Scott Mendell, being an Aggie has opened the door to several meetings and friendships. He is proud to be an A&M graduate and wants to help current students enjoy their time at Texas A&M as much as he enjoyed his.
