Columbia, MO

From the moment he set foot in Aggieland as president of Texas A&M University, Dr. R. Bowen Loftin ’71 has made one thing clear. His primary job as president is to care for the students of Texas A&M University. His legacy is not his bold leadership that took Texas A&M into the SEC. He prefers not to be remembered solely for being president when Texas A&M broke records in enrollment, rankings, athletic performance and research dollars. Loftin lead Texas A&M to acquire a law school and merge with the Health Science Center, but, not even that, he says, can compare to his main goal. His deep and sacrificial love for students overpowers all else. “That’s my presidency. I want my legacy to be focused on students. It’s what I want to be remembered for,” he said. “It’s also why we’re making this gift.” In his years as president, Loftin said he’s seen the difference that The Association of Former Students makes for Texas A&M. He himself is a beneficiary as donor dollars allowed his office to serve across the university in ways that wouldn’t have otherwise been possible. “We make our money go as far as we can, but you always see unmet needs,” he said. It’s from first-hand experience that he can say, “I know that what my wife and I give will end up supporting the students in a direct way,” said. It’s also from first-hand experience that he knows the impact that a scholarship can have on a student as it’s because of a scholarship funded by a former student that he was able to attend and graduate from A&M. (Read more at tx.ag/LoftinECC.) The role that former students play in the success of Texas A&M cannot be underestimated, he said. Last year, 43,000 former students and friends came together to contribute $3.4 million in support of Texas A&M. But in addition to money, former students also serve on boards and advisory groups. They help refine curriculum and serve as mentors. They come back to Aggieland and share the Aggie Spirit in a way that makes Texas A&M so special. Loftin has been a donor to The Association’s Annual Fund for 30 years. As a former student he’s a product of Texas A&M, “and I’m proud of that,” he said.

Tommie is a past president of the 12th Man Foundation and is a past chair of the College of Engineering External Advisory Council for Texas A&M.

Carolyn Lohman graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor degree in education and later earned a Master of Arts degree in counseling and clinical psychology at Southern Methodist University. She currently serves as vice chair of the One Spirit One Vision Campaign and chairs the College of Education portion of that campaign. The Lohmans have also supported Texas A&M monetarily through gifts to the 12th Man Foundation, the College of Education, the College of Engineering as well as through a Presidential Endowed Scholarship.

We believe the future of our state and nation hinges on developing an educated population, particularly leaders. We also believe our most valuable resource is our young people. It gives us great satisfaction to invest in the future through impacting these youthful lives in meaningful ways. An education obtained at Texas A&M has made all the difference in our lives and we believe it will have a similar influence on the thousands of students who place their faith in the education system of Texas A&M. Carolyn’s Dad was an Aggie, class of ’40, the first of his family to graduate college. He instilled in her the value of education and a love of Texas A&M. Tommie’s dad encouraged him to attend A&M rather than OU because of his belief that the values instilled at this university would serve him as well as the excellent education he had the opportunity to acquire here. Our life experiences have proven them both correct. We want to enable other young people to have the same type opportunities. Education changes lives and shapes the future. We love the idea as well the actual experience of witnessing that happening regularly here at A&M. For all of us, what could be a better investment of our resources than having the opportunity to do that?

After serving in both the European and Pacific theatres, he returned to A&M to complete his civil engineering degree. After moving to Texas from Waupun, Wisconsin, Gretchen graduated from the Baylor University School of Nursing. Jack became the Supervising Resident Engineer for the Texas Highway Department before he retired after 36 years. During this time, Gretchen worked as a R.N. for a private clinic, the school system, and the county. Jack and Gretchen have spent a lifetime as supporters of Texas A&M.

I wanted to attend A&M because, even in the 40's, it had a good reputation, high standards, and a great engineering school. I have continued to believe in A&M and encouraged our children to attend there. We love going back to the campus for athletic events and other activities and to watch its growth.

Jason Mahoney graduated from Texas A&M in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. As of 2018, he was the financial planning manager for Texas Instruments in Dallas.

His fondest memories of his time on campus are of Aggie baseball games, enjoying Slovacek’s sausages and relentlessly razzing opposing pitchers and coaches. Today he continues to embody the Aggie Spirit throughout his daily life, and is thankful for the chance to support other Aggies.

He said Texas A&M not only provides a quality education and opportunities in the workplace, but also instills core values in students that prepare them for their time after graduation. Those core values positively affected the way he conducts himself at work, how he thinks about his pursuits outside of work, and continually push him to be a better person.

Jason welcomed his wife Brenda into the Aggie Network, and both enjoy making a lasting legacy and providing other students with the opportunity to receive a valuable education.

“The Endowed Century Club is a great opportunity to leave behind a lasting legacy that continues to provide resources for many years to come,” he said. “We also trust that The Association of Former Students is in the best position to manage our gift by finding those in need and providing them with the necessary resources.”

Bluffton, SC

It is often said that time can make the heart grow fonder. While Gregory Martin’s heart has always been with Texas A&M, it wasn’t until his daughter chose to attend his alma matter that he was reconnected with the spirit that had once pulled him to campus.

Gregory Martin ’71 graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in management. As a student, he was a member of the Corps of Cadets in Company C-1, an experience which he would later cite as having a “profound impact” on his life. The first of these profound experiences came as a cadet during his fish year while attending his first Silver Taps ceremony. This memory marked the defining moment when Gregory knew he was attending “someplace special.”

After graduating from Texas A&M, Gregory found great success with the Baltimore Gas & Electric Company, spending over 30 years with the company before retiring. Despite his professional successes, Gregory’s Baltimore-based career put 1500 miles between his home and the place he had once called home. It was then that Gregory’s daughter, Ann ’12, chose to attend Texas A&M, a decision which started a spirited journey for Ann and rekindled a lost love for Gregory. Although he tried never to sway his daughter, the decision to attend Texas A&M made him “proud to say the least.” With Ann a student at Texas A&M, Gregory once again had a link to Texas A&M and a reason to make the 1500 mile journey to campus. Although decades separated their time at Texas A&M, the Aggie spirit had equal influence on both Ann and Gregory.

With his renewed connection to A&M, Gregory once again remembered the elements of Texas A&M that were sources of pride and gratitude to him. After contributing to the university for over 30 years, Gregory decided to become an Endowed Century Club member in an effort to provide the same positive experience at A&M for another deserving student. Ann, following in the footsteps of her father and aiming to perpetuate the Aggie Spirit, became member of the Endowed Century Club as well.

The Aggie Network gave John Matush a job opportunity before he had even graduated from Texas A&M University. Despite a pending military commitment, he interviewed with a major oil company executive—a fellow Aggie—and was offered a job at Texaco. He credits his rapid rise to success in the industry to his geological engineering degree from Texas A&M and leadership training from the Corps of Cadets.

His fondest memories include the Corps and the fellowship and friendships developed in his unit; however, the most memorable moments from his university days include meeting his wife, Sandy, and taking her to Ring Dance.

The couple—who are 38-year members of the Century Club—are strong believers in giving back and want to provide opportunities for students to attend the “best university in the nation and allow our school to have the funds to attract the best professors, to continue and grow the excellence which we have.” They established an Endowed Century Club gift over a period of five years to make a more significant impact at Texas A&M.

John retired as corporate chief geoscientist at Texaco in August 1994. He and Sandy have three children and nine grandchildren, and their Aggie legacy extends to John’s three siblings, one grandchild, and eight nieces and nephews.
