Roll Call Tribute

Richard "Dick" Alterman '49 July 14, 2025 12:53 PM updated: July 14, 2025 12:59 PM

Richard Irving "Dick" Alterman

April 22, 1929 - July 5, 2025

It is with great sadness that we tell of the passing of San Antonio legend and Jewish philanthropist, Richard Irving Alterman, aged 96, who died July 5, 2025. Richard was the husband of Charlotte Sue, father of Aileen Tiras (and Mark), Marsha Rosenfeld (and Kenny), and Mark (zichrono livracha).

Richard (Dick) Alterman was born in San Antonio, TX, on April 22, 1929, to Nathan and Esther Alterman.

Nathan Alterman founded Nathan Alterman Electric Company in 1923. The company grew and strengthened as it helped to remodel downtown San Antonio through the 1930’s and 1940’s. In 1949, upon graduation from Texas A & M University, Richard joined his father’s company, becoming president in 1972. The company prospered under his leadership with countless projects including 30 at the HemisFair Park for the World’s Fair in 1968, hospitals, manufacturing plants, hotels, regional shopping malls, and high-rise office buildings. Richard retired in 1984 and made the decision to sell the company to its employees.

The Jewish Community of San Antonio was a passion for Richard. He gave of his time, talent, and treasure. Some speak of their commitment to the Jewish principle of L’Dor Vador (from generation to generation) , but Richard lived it and was sought after for leadership roles in almost every Jewish organization in San Antonio.

Richard was a talented businessman and avid sports enthusiast (particularly basketball and golf), but his greatest focus was his family. While a brilliant, tough, and shrewd businessman he was tender hearted when it came to family and family matters. Richard led his family by example creating a family legacy of grit, integrity, loyalty, and above all else – love.

Richard's 74 (almost 75) year marriage to Charlotte Sue was the cornerstone of his life. They walked through life together (almost always holding hands) and she was the love of his life from the day they met till the day he passed.

He is survived by his wife, two children, seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. His son, Mark Alterman, passed away in 2024.

Richard was buried on Tuesday July 8th, 2025, at Agudas Achim Memorial Gardens in San Antonio, TX. We join in the traditional prayer that God comfort the Alterman family along with all who mourn.

Zichrnono Livracha. May his memory be for a blessing.
