Homer Samuel "Sam" Schertz

May 3, 1946 - November 12, 2023

Homer Samuel Schertz of Rockport, Texas passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Born in Denton on May 3, 1946, to the late Homer W. Schertz and Jessie V. McFarlin Schertz, Sam's life journey was marked by a deep commitment to faith, family and service to others.

Growing up on a farm north of Denton, Sam carried forward a proud legacy of family involvement in agriculture. After graduating from Denton High School in 1964, he married the late Dorthy 'Dot' Trietsch on June 17, 1967.

After graduating high school, Sam enrolled at Texas Tech University where he balanced school and part-time work. In October 1966, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving with distinction in Vietnam, holding top secret clearance, and earning numerous decorations and commendations. As a sergeant, he received an honorable discharge in October 1970. When he returned home, he pursued a B.S. degree in Agricultural Engineering at Texas A&M University, graduating in May 1974.

In June 1974, Sam and Dot settled in South Texas to raise a family and Sam began a fulfilling thirty-six-year career with Central Power & Light Company (CPL). His dedication and leadership saw him hold key roles, including Director of Marketing at CPL and Director of Governmental Affairs for the Central and Southwest Corporation (CSW). Sam continued to mentor and inspire others until his retirement in 2010.

Sam lost his wife, Dot in 2009 after 42 long, happy years of marriage. As a widower, Sam found love and support in Mary "Ernie" Edmundson and they married on May 25, 2014. They enjoyed taking trips in their RV, often visiting family, and enjoying the beauty of the country.

Sam loved his family and friends well. He had the most generous spirit and often spoke of his life's calling to serve his fellow man, which was rooted in an abiding faith in Jesus. He cherished fellowship, was happiest surrounded by loved ones, and enjoyed cooking wonderful meals for them. He was a proud and devoted PawPaw to his two young grandchildren, showering them with gifts, and sharing with them his love of fishing, reading, and the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife, Ernie, two sons, Matt Schertz (Tamara) and Jeff Schertz (Sarah), brothers Danny Schertz (Sandra) and Ricky Schertz (Susie), grandchildren Samuel and Lydia, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and first wife Dot, he is preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Mallard.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, November 20, 2023, at the Blue Mound United Methodist Church in Denton, with burial at Blue Mound Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 4 pm to 6 pm on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at Mulkey-Bowles-Montgomery Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held in South Texas at a later date.

The family expresses heartfelt gratitude for the prayers, support, and love received during this difficult time.
