James Douglas Cathey passed away Saturday, October 21, 2023, surrounded by family at the Audie L. Murphey VA Memorial Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.
Born in 1967 in Mesa, Arizona, he grew up with a love for learning, the outdoors, and scale miniature models. James would spend his formative years in Kerrville, Texas before beginning his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University where he met many lifelong friends.
James would go on to join the United States Air Force as a flight crew chief in Anchorage Alaska at Elmendorf Air Force Base working on A-10 Thunderbolt IIs. James would medically retire from the Air Force to begin treatment for carcinoid cancer. While medically retired, James never lost his sense of purpose and always found things to do. James would assist around his wife’s insurance office, home school his twin boys, and help friends and acquaintances learn about how to shoot and maintain firearms. James touched the lives of innumerable individuals and never met a stranger. James will be missed by many and will serve as an inspiration to never give up and to love and care for others.
James is survived by his wife Sharon Hopkins-Cathey, his sons Clayton Cathey and Douglas Cathey, his daughter-in-law Kara Cathey, his mother, Phyllis Cathey, his brothers Tim Cathey, and Kerry Cathey, and many loving uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Billy Ray Cathey.
A celebration of life service will be held in his honor at Mission Park-Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas on November 11th from 2:00pm-3:00pm.
