Kenneth David "Ken" Cunningham
September 12, 1965 - May 23, 2023
Kenneth David Cunningham was born September 12, 1965 in Lubbock, Texas and passed unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. Ken grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana and graduated from Captain Shreve High School in 1984 alongside his high school sweetheart, Rosemary Petty.
Ken attended Texas A & M University in College Station where he earned his BBA in accounting. A week after graduating from Texas A & M, Ken and Rosemary married on August 20, 1988, and recently celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary. After marrying, Ken and Rosemary moved to Houston, Texas where Ken was employed by Arthur Andersen.
For the next 35 years, Ken used his gifts in accounting to serve several corporations well in various capacities. Each time a company was acquired by another, Ken was blessed to remain employed and advance with the new company. He served as Tax Coordinator for North Central Oil Corporation; Tax Manager for POGO Producing Company; Director of Corporate Planning for Plains Exploration & Production; Director of Corporate Planning for Freeport McMoRan Oil & Gas and, most recently, Director of Corporate Planning for Sable Permian Resources.
In 1994, Ken and Rosemary welcomed their first child, Emily Grace, into the world and three years later in 1997, Kenneth Alan completed their family. Ken loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He and Rosemary chose to worship Him regularly with their children at Sugar Land Baptist Church where Ken faithfully served as deacon, finance committee chairman/member and trustee. Aside from his career and church involvement, Ken loved supporting Emily and Kenneth in all their activities, (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, swim team, dance, drill team, tennis, soccer, baseball, basketball, golf and band). Ken’s home away from home since his childhood was his family’s property on Toledo Bend Lake where he made priceless memories with family and friends. Ken was an avid fisherman, hunter, water skier and ski boat owner/driver. Ken was a passionate Aggie sports fan and never missed an opportunity to cheer them on enthusiastically, especially in football.
Besides his immediate family, Ken had multiple aunts, uncles and cousins who added much joy to his life. Ken was also blessed to have an extended network of colleagues and friends whom he genuinely valued.
Ken is preceded in death by his loving parents, Kenneth George and Elizabeth Page Cunningham. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Cunningham; his daughter, Emily Graves and husband, Will; his son, Kenneth Cunningham and wife, Christina; his brother, Kevin Cunningham and wife, Juliet; his sister, Carolyn Shillcutt and husband, Steven; sister-in-law Kelly Petty; and sister and brother in law Gay and Thomas Rhoades. Ken adored his nephews and niece: Ryan, Payton & Nathan Shillcutt; Zachary Cunningham; and Davis and Mara Petty. Faith, family and tradition guided Ken’s life and his role as a treasured patriarch of our family leaves an unforgettable legacy which will continue for generations to come.
A memorial service celebrating Ken’s life will be at Sugar Land Baptist Church on Saturday, September 9 at 11 a.m. with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Sugar Land Baptist Church or The 12th Man Foundation.
