Roll Call Tribute

Evelyn "Jayne" Mobley '85 July 6, 2023 12:46 PM updated: July 6, 2023 1:05 PM

Evelyn Jayne Mobley
April 9, 1941 - June 23, 2023

Evelyn Jayne Patton Mobley, age 82, went home to be with the Lord on June 23, 2023, after an 8-month battle with soft tissue cancer.

Jayne was born in Irondale, Ohio on April 9, 1941, and grew up in Barberton, Ohio. She graduated from Barberton High School in 1959 where she was Senior Queen and Yearbook Editor. She remained connected to her high school class the rest of her life. She married William H. Mobley in 1964, and raised their two daughters, Michele and Jennifer. Along the way she was a Girl Scout leader, PTA President, and active in many neighborhood activities, including bridge, tennis, and dance. She always had a spirit of adventure and enjoyed a year of living in Taiwan.

She moved to College Station, Texas in 1980 where she enrolled in college and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1985 with a degree in education. She taught history and government at A&M Consolidated High School, and then devoted herself full time to being first lady of Texas A&M University while her husband was President of Texas A&M. She loved participating in all the activities of university life, and even climbed stack one year as the Corps built the traditional bonfire. She served on the board of the Sterling Evans Library at Texas A&M University, as well as on the Advisory Committee on Public Education for the Higher Education Coordinating Board of Texas.

She led several neighborhood groups in Denton and Flower Mound, Texas, and had a talent for bringing people together. She was very involved in the lives of her grandchildren as they grew up and was active with Valley Creek Church in Flower Mound, Texas for as long as she was able. She also served for many years on the appraisal review board of Denton County, Texas. She loved to travel and visited many states and many countries over the years. She was naturally competitive, and eager to win at cards each evening even in her last weeks. She was witty and funny to the end; her sense of humor never failed her even as her body declined.

She is survived by her sister Deborah Patton Spry, by her daughters, Michele A. Mobley (Ahmed Mahmoud) and Jennifer L. Mobley (Keith Abbott), by grandchildren Maryam Mahmoud (Nicholas Boffa), Adam Mahmoud (Margeaux), Sami Mahmoud, Kathryn Hickl, Colin Hickl (Emily), and Meredith Hickl, by seven great grandchildren (so far), and by several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents, Mary K. and Edgar T. Patton, by William H. Mobley, by her sister, Yvonne Kay Boggs, and by her nephew Jeffrey Boggs.

Please join us for a celebration of her life Saturday, July 1, 2023, from 3-5 pm at Lantana Golf Club, 800 Golf Club Dr., Argyle, Texas. A private burial will be held later near College Station, Texas.

Rather than flowers, please consider a charitable contribution to the Texas A&M Foundation to benefit the College of Education, or to a charity of your choice.
