Tobias "Toby" Gus Selcer
June 27, 1957 - April 8, 2023

On April 8, 2023 the world lost a beloved brother, father, and friend, Tobias (Toby) Gus Selcer.

Toby was born on June 27, 1957, to Ervin and Judy Selcer in San Antonio, TX. He graduated from Bay City High School in 1975 and attended Texas A&M University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering. During the course of his studies, he began working in A&M’s Materials Testing Laboratory, where he remained for almost 19 years, eventually becoming Division Head over the facilities and operations.

Toby was an extraordinarily creative and talented engineer, with multi-disciplinary expertise in fields such as mechanical, structural, and material engineering, hydrodynamics, metallurgy, welding technology, hydraulics, and system controls. His extensive career beyond A&M included work as Engineering Manager and Senior Technical Advisor for companies such as Dynacon, Technip, and EMAS Group, and as Director of Marine Operations for Blue Origin. He particularly excelled at problem-solving and was greatly valued in meeting the challenges required in executing the most difficult projects, often serving as a key member on high-stress/high-consequence Crisis Response Teams.

A lover of the natural world, Toby was particularly at home on and in water, finding great peace and solace in the sounds of the ocean. A gun and knife enthusiast, he also enjoyed hunting, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. Toby was a loving father, devoted to the raising of his two daughters and step-son, each of whom he was tremendously proud. A kind, thoughtful, and talented man of outstanding character, with a genuine passion for life, he was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Toby is survived by his sister Tina Jones; brother Tom Selcer; daughters, Kate Gomez and Amy Peoples; stepson Billy Naivar; sons-in-law, and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Judy Selcer, and his brother Tod Selcer.

Celebration of Life services will be held on April 22, 2023 at 11:00 am at Grace Community Fellowship, 1900 East Boling Hwy, Wharton, TX 77488.

Toby was looking forward to his retirement and had a goal to adopt and train a service dog. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his honor to: Faithful Paws Pet Therapy of Houston by visiting www.faithfulpawshouston.org
