Ronald Dean Miles Sr.
July 25, 1941 – May 28, 2021

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Ronald Dean Miles, Sr., age 79, on May 28, 2021, in San Antonio, Texas. Ronald was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and a proud American who will be dearly missed.

Ron was born in Brinkley, Arkansas, the only child of James B.A. and Susie Fern Miles on July 25, 1941. His father was in the U.S. Army, and he traveled all over the world as a child with stops in Japan, Germany and posts in the U.S. The family settled in San Antonio when his father was assigned to Fort Sam Houston. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and was active in sports and student activities. He then went on to attend Texas A&M University and became a member of the Corp of Cadets, one of his most proud achievements. Before graduating in 1965, Ron met and married Dana Louise Mead. They had 3 children and enjoyed 26 years of marriage before her passing in 1991.

In 1966 Ron became an officer in the U.S. Army. He served his country for 26 years, which included a tour of duty in Vietnam during the war and posts in Germany and throughout the U.S. During his time in the Army, Ron earned many medals and citations for valor and service that included The Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, to name a few. As a family these are the achievements for which we are most proud.

After his retirement from the Army, Ron worked to secure military contracts for the Cherokee Nation, as well as other Native American tribes. It was during this time that he met his current wife Sandra through close friends on a blind date. They married in 2005 and loved to travel and especially enjoyed the beach during their 16-year marriage. He then fully retired in 2006 and spent much of his free time playing golf, fishing, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Although his passing was unexpected and way too soon, Ron lived a full life. The stories from his younger years are legendary. He was still in close contact with his best friends from his early years, seeing them regularly and golfing, fishing and BS extravaganza with them every year during what they called "Man Week". He loved his trips to the remote lakes of Canada with his son, son-in-law and friends. You could always find him telling fish tales by the campfire at night. It was truly a special time for him and those that were blessed to be with him on those trips.

He cared deeply and loved well. If you had the honor of meeting him you experienced his deep, genuine engagement, making you feel seen, heard and known. He had integrity from the tips of his toes all the way to the top of his full head of beautiful hair. He was sentimental, he was honest, and he was his family's true north.

Ronald was preceded in death by parents James B. A. and Susie Fern Miles; his first wife and mother of their children Dana Louise. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; and his children, son Ronald Dean Jr and wife Jenny, his daughters Dawn Rene Spradling and Audra Miles Outlaw and husband Blake. Grandchildren Dustin Ferguson and wife Myranda; Drew, Dean Spradling , and Gage, Miles, and Brooks Outlaw. Great grandchildren Lilah Spradling.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 7th at 12:00 pm at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with a committal service to be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:30 pm.
