Garland Louis Himel
August 25, 1934 - December 20, 2019
Garland Louis Himel of Sulphur went to be with the Lord December 20, 2019, at the age of 85. Garland was born in Beaumont, Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a Chemical Engineering degree and from McNeese State University with a Masters in Environmental
Science. He went into the Army Chemical Corp, earning 1st Lieutenant ranking before joining the reserves as Company Commander of the 935th mobile lab unit. Upon exiting the Reserves, Garland was promoted to Captain.
He retired as a chemical engineer from Firestone Synthetic Rubber after 20 years and then joined Synpol Synthetic in Nederland until retirement after 19 years of service. He decided his life’s work was not complete so Garland became a substitute teacher and
instructor of ISI at Sulphur High School until 2016. His biggest accomplishment though was his gift of love, wisdom, and humor to his children and grandchildren, who simply knew him as our Poppy.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter Connie Conner and husband Delbert of Longville; daughter Julia Delcambre and husband Damon of Sulphur; daughter Laura Bolton and husband Mark of Sulphur; daughter Cindy Himel of Lafayette; grandchildren Peyton
Conner, Regan Conner, Deneé Delcambre, Casen Delcambre, Teague Young, Keylee Young, and Blythe Bolton; siblings Marion Truell and Carolyn McGown; dear loved friend Ann Uzee.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beth Barbay Himel; parents Jeanne Pauline Engerran Himel and Leonce Joseph Himel Jr; siblings Marvin Himel, Elman Himel, Loretta Wright and Carroll Himel.
At Garland’s request, no services will be held. Cremation was entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles.
