J. Rhett Rushing
October 5, 1963 - November 3, 2019

J. Rhett Rushing passed away on November 3, 2019, in San Antonio, TX. Rhett was born in Port Arthur, TX, on October 5, 1963, and grew up in Houston. He is survived by his sons, Zane and Wyatt, and his mother, Marlene. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul. Rhett was an Aggie, having graduated from Texas A&M University with a B.A. in English (Class of ’85.) He was an avid Aggie football fan. He was known as a folklorist and an accomplished storyteller. He received his M.A. degree in Folklore from Western Kentucky University and studied towards a Ph.D. in Folklore at Indiana University-Bloomington. He was a long-term member of the Texas Folklore Society, and served as its president from 2004-2005. His career spanned a number of different areas, including teaching high school in Houston, middle school in California, and as part of the research program at the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio. He also loved fishing and baseball, and was a die-hard Astros fan.

The memorial service honoring his life will be held on Saturday, December 7, at 2 PM at Castle Ridge Mortuary, 8008 W. Military Drive, San Antonio, TX. We will have a time for friends to tell stories remembering him during the service.
