Sheila Nelson ’92, a development specialist at The Association of Former Students, was in May named the Texas A&M University Faculty & Staff Student Veteran Supporter of the Year for the 2017-18 school year by the Veteran Resource and Support Center.
Nelson was chosen as the Student Veteran Supporter of the Month in March, and from each of the monthly honorees, the Student Veterans Association and the staff of the Veterans Resource and Support Center choose one person to receive the annual award.
She was named for the annual honor for her work with the Aggie Rings for Veterans program, specifically working with donors to establish 16 veteran-specific endowed Aggie Ring scholarships and many other veteran targeted Ring efforts.
“When we first started the Student Veteran Aggie Ring Program five years ago, I never dreamed that we could help this many Aggie veterans,” said Col. Gerald Smith ’82, director of the VRSC. “Sheila has been the key to success. Her leadership, dedication to excellence and selfless service has created immeasurable positive impact for over 100 student veterans and their families. She is a wonderful example of the Aggie Network in action.”
To date, 160 Aggie veterans have received Ring scholarships through The Association’s efforts.
As well as donors’ gifts made specifically to Ring or other scholarship funds, any gift made to The Association generally helps support these scholarships.
