Thanks To You, Aggie Band Marched At Disneyland

Scot Walker '90 August 31, 2017 2:00 PM updated: October 9, 2017 10:35 AM

Members of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band marched at Disneyland earlier this month, and funding via The Association of Former Students made it possible.

The Association has for years helped defray the substantial expenses the Aggie Band incurs to travel, with $90,000 of donor funds allocated for the 2017 football season alone. When the Aggie football team traveled to California to face UCLA at the Rose Bowl, upperclassmen from the band traveled to Pasadena to perform at halftime of the game.

The band also had the opportunity, the day before the game, to march in the famous daily parade at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim -- but each of the band members first had to have a ticket to enter the park.

Corps of Cadets leadership approached The Association of Former Students about the expense, and The Association allocated an additional $30,000 to cover the cost for the band upperclassmen to enter the park and participate in the parade.

The Aggie Band marched at Disneyland in Anaheim on Sept. 2, to the delight of the onlooking crowd that included many Aggies. Then on Sept. 3, the band had an open rehearsal at South Pasadena High School. Then they headed to the Rose Bowl, where they marched at halftime of the UCLA game.

Marty Holmes '87, vice president of The Association, said the members of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band are among the university's greatest ambassadors.

"We were so excited to have the Aggies get to play in the Rose Bowl, and when the game was moved to Sunday, we wanted to make sure the band had a great time while they were there," Holmes said. "Marching at Disneyland was a great experience for them, but the increased exposure is great for Texas A&M and for the Corps of Cadets. And the band is always loved and welcomed by former students in those distant locations who seldom get to see them perform live."

For the UCLA game, as for every away game, The Association of Former Students also coordinated other Aggie activities surrounding the game, including Midnight Yell Practice and the free All-Aggie Tailgate. For more information on all these events, please visit tx.ag/awaygames.

The Association of Former Students works continuously to promote the university and the Aggie Spirit, to support our revered traditions, to strengthen the bonds of the Aggie Network and to support the student body. Our work is only possible because of the generous support of tens of thousands of individual donors.
