In March, The Association recognized President and CEO Porter S. Garner III ’79 for 35 years of service, including 16 as chief executive.
Under his leadership, The Association has raised more than $80 million in support of Texas A&M and more than $33 million in capital and endowed gifts, including gifts for the enhancement of the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center. Garner’s bold vision and leadership of this enhancement project created a premier Alumni Center for Texas A&M where each year hundreds of thousands gather for celebrations and to learn more about Texas A&M and The Association of Former Students.
During his tenure as President and CEO, Garner has successfully worked with five Texas A&M presidents and two interim presidents, along with four chancellors and two interim chancellors of The Texas A&M University System.
Garner began his career with The Association in 1981 as Field Director, traveling across the country for 12 years helping A&M Clubs bring Aggies together in service to Texas A&M. He was promoted to Associate Executive Director in 1993 and became chief executive in January of 2000.
“My inspiration in 1981 was the same as it is today,” Garner said. “Knowing and working with thousands of noble Aggie volunteers who serve and support Texas A&M in so many meaningful ways remains the greatest part of my job.”
