Joe B. Briscoe
Joe Bailey Briscoe, of Southern Pines, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012.
Joe was born July 30, 1927, and grew up in Gainesville, Texas. He attended Ben Franklin Elementary, and Gainesville Junior and Senior High schools, during which time he was the president of the senior class, the starting left guard and the linebacker for the
Gainesville Leopards. Joe graduated as part of the class of 1944.
After graduating high school he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Air Corps, where he served as an aviation radioman-gunner in a dive bomber squadron. After being honorably discharged, Joe returned to Gainesville in July 1946 and prepared to enroll in Texas A&M, where
he eventually graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. While at Texas A&M, Joe met Patricia Strong, of Denton, Texas. Patricia was the love of Joe’s life, and they were married in The Little Chapel in the Woods in Denton on April 8, 1950.
They subsequently had three children: Cheryl Danna, Debra Briscoe-Edy and Richard Scott Briscoe (deceased). Joe spent 30 years with the Pontiac division of General Motors, rising to an executive position before retiring in March 1987. He and Pat retired to
Southern Pines to play golf. In April 2010, Joe and Pat celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Joe is survived by his wife. Pat; two daughters, Cheryl Danna and Debra Briscoe-Edy; son-in-law, David Danna; three grandchildren, Stacy Danna Skipinski (Brian Skipinski), Mark Danna (Brittany Danna), and Jared Edy; and great-grandson, Braeden Skipinski.
