Thomas E. "Tom" Wisdom Jr. '60

Thomas E. "Tom" Wisdom Jr. '60

Active duty July 1960 2nd Lt Armor Regular Army commission.. Married Judy Porter September `60.  Germany Oct 60-Oct 63 in Armored Cav Squadron along Czech Border. Airborne Jump School November `63. Ft. Hood Dec 63-Feb 66. Captain `64.  Tank Company Commander 1965 won Draper Award as Top Tank Company Continental US Army.  VietNam Feb 66-Feb 67 Operations Officer II Force. Feb 67 to Ft. Sam Houston 4th Army Hq. Enlisted Personnel Staff Office. Major Dec 67.  Separated from Active Duty March 68. Eight years in the Army provided a great opportunity to gain experience and mature under some rather stressful assignments.  Judy and I both really appreciated our time while I was on active duty as an Armor officer.   Business Career began with 3M Company in Sales and Marketing Management positions.  Started in sales in San Antonio, moved to Houston in sales, 3M Corporate in Sales Training Department, Chicago as area manager of ten Midwestern states, 3M corporate as Marketing Development Manager in 1978 and left 3M in 1982 to join a major client as VP General Manager of an area duplicating center in Houston.  Our ticket back to Texas. In 1985 part of an internal buyout by a group of executives to form a private company headquartered in New Jersey.  I was based in Houston.  In 1989 pressure began to move me to New Jersey/New York headquarters.  No way.   Began search for a new business in Texas. December 1990 purchased regional franchise license for a direct mail advertising business in Texas area Waco south to Brownsville.  Opened regional office in San Antonio.  Have grown the business from a small mailing area of 20000 homes in San Antonio to the current entity that covers 360000 homes in San Antonio/Austin markets.  Sold regional license back to Money Mailer Corporate in December 2004 for a nice sum and have retained a smaller area that sells in to not only the San Antonio /Austin area but also supports clients with offices in many major markets around the country.    Currently trying to pass the major part of the business to my son and his wife who have been with us for over 13 years.  Trying to semi-retire and enjoy the fruits of our labors. Aggie activities have been growing in past thirty plus years.  I was fortunate to get rights to old movie "We`ve Never Been Licked" in 1990.  At our 30th Class Reunion presented the idea to Class of `60 and ten of us put about $6000 together to develop the product for sale on video cassette to Aggies thru the Aggie Magazine.  We formed a non-profit corporation for Class of `60 hoping to raise some bit of money to donate to activities at A&M.  Our Development Fund `60 project started by selling thru The Texas Aggie Christmas season 1990.  What was hoped to maybe raise a couple thousand blew all forecasts out the door and our project has exceeded our every expectation.  Class of `60 is a business driven Class that finds ways to raise monies and direct those monies back intro Aggie related causes.  As a Class, we have generated over six figures in profits that go 100% to A&M activities.  Our Class is the only Class as an entity recognized by the Texas A&M Foundation as a Legacy level contributor.  Many Class of `60  individuals give much more money to A&M, but this is a Class of `60 group effort.  We are building a Class of `60 endowment fund that will exist long after we have all gone to keep funding students and student activities at A&M.  In 2014 we formally donated our right, title and interest for the movie We`ve Never Been Licked to The Association of Former Students to maintains as a property to sell to Aggies for many years to come.  My eight to ten year estimate of what it would be worth to The Association was exceeded in Christmas season 2014 and 2015.  And Class of `60 is still working on new projects.  We may be old, but we are still good marketing guys who know how to find ways to generate money to help A&M. Our latest Class Project initiated in October 2016 was to fund Aggie Ring Scholarships for Veteran Students on Campus.  Thru the Veterans Resources and Services Center Class of `60 members have now raised monies and presented Aggie Rings to fifty seven veterans reaching Senior Class status as of the April 12nd 2019 Ring Day.  A great way for those of us in `60 to say thank you to the veterans back at A&M today in being able to make sure they can receive an Aggie Ring that will last them a lifetime.  We are working with other Class Agents now to give them the idea of how to do this so other Classes can adopt this program as just one other way they can support A&M related activities. Not all of my Classmates can afford to fund an Endowed Ring Scholarship but as a group of Aggies we can donate $250 to $1000 and be able to fund an Aggie Ring for a deserving veteran.  A project on the drawing board is investigating how Aggies might be able to donate their Aggie Rings in their will to go back to Balfour to be recycled for use by future years Aggies and that will allow recognition to that new Aggie that the gold in their ring was comprised in part by a ring donated by Tom Wisdom `60 (or whomever) so that that new Senior Aggie knows some of the legacy about the ring he or she will wear for many years. It is a good feeling for Class of `60 to be able to brag about this record of giving and the chance to pay it forward.  In my spare time, I have served on local non-profit boards, support three strong non-profits in the area, and still service customers for our business.  Active in several area Chambers and help them generate monies for projects they operate.  Proud to serve as a Class Agent for `60 for over thirty years.  And happily married to a wonderful lady I met at Camp Warneke in New Braunfels in 1955.  She was in NewB from Pasadena, Texas with her family for a week.  New Braunfels was a great place to grow up.  We married in 1960 when I graduated and was commissioned after dating for five years.  Two great children Tony and Katy who have great families and are in the New Braunfels area.  Judy and I live on a hill just south of Blanco and enjoy the small town life.  We even have two great grand children.  Life is good.  Staying busy and helping people keeps you young at heart.  At the present I am soon to be president of the Sul Ross Association that represents some 13000 Aggies who have been graduated for over 55 years.  Almost full retirement will occur  early 2019.  Then I can have even more time to support A&M activities as well as for Judy and I to go spend our childrens inheritance.  It is about time to slow down and smell the roses.
