Wayne was Aggie Class of 1968, AFROTC Squadron 9 (Hellcat 9)
“I chose A&M for two reasons: for the ROTC program - this was height of Viet Nam and I preferred Officer status and security to be able to finish college before service. I was planning to major in Aeronautical Engineering - that changed after I took Calculus.
Elaine and I had married just two weeks after graduation - she from East Texas State University (now A&M Commerce) - and me from A&M.
Once while in USAF, I was playing intramural fast pitch softball and handed my Aggie Ring AND my wedding ring to a team-mate to "watch" while I was at bat. When I went to retrieve them after the game - gone - "nobody knew nuthin'". As their Commanding Officer I put out a bulletin that the rings should be returned to the squadron before the end of the week and there would be no questions asked, BUT if Not........I forget what I threatened - probably restricted to base, no weekend liberty for the entire unit. Both rings were "on my desk" the next morning.”
“We elected to fund this scholarship because Aggie Rings "Stand Out" - they are recognized immediately by Aggies as well as others. It is an opportunity to give back to my University. My ring was and is very important to me and I would like to make sure other Aggies are not deprived of their ring because of lack of funds - mine only cost me $50, but that was a lot to me in 1967!”
