As part of the One Spirit One Vision – A Texas A&M University Campaign, the staff members of The Association gathered together to fund an Endowed Diamond Century Club gift. For many staff members, this was a chance to perpetually impact our organization. “I think it gives the staff a sense of pride to know that they too can be a part of a large gift and a legacy to our organization,” says Gwen Lucas ’91. This gift will ensure that support for the Aggie Network will live on in perpetuity. “As Aggies we have a tradition of giving back,” says Kathryn Greenwade ’88. “Perhaps it’s because we all feel that Texas A&M gave us a great deal, and we want to make sure future generations benefit as we did.”

Supporting Texas A&M effects people in very different ways. For our staff members, this was no different. “Many of our staff, including myself, are not at the stage in life to individually make an Endowed Diamond Century Club gift,” says Cecilee Herd ’95. “However, by coming together and combining our money, we are able to help ensure a bright future for Texas A&M.”

Kelly and Don enjoy spending time with their (almost grown) children and family, exercising, and getting away to their beach house for some good trout fi shing whenever time permits. Since graduating, Kelly still meets up with college roommates once per year to attend an Aggie football game. She also attends other games with her family.Kelly and Don have two sons, Ross ’14 and Jacob (college decision pending, but Kelly says “he’d better pick A&M!”). Kelly and Don live in Friendswood, Texas, and are members of the Friendswood Community Church.

I have always tried to live a life of high integrity and A&M fostered that behavior. Being around good people makes you a better person.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University, Steve Brauer, Jr. ’02 worked as a design engineer in Houston. He returned to school for his master’s degree and served as operations project manager on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program at Lockheed Martin. In 2009, he joined Hunter Engineering Co., starting as a field representative and working his way up to executive vice president.

Brauer was honored by the College of Engineering for outstanding early professional achievement and now serves on the college’s National Advisory Council. He holds leadership positions both at Texas A&M and in his community, as a captain for the 12th Man Foundation’s Champions Council, a member of the Fort Worth Stock Show Syndicate and director of the Pitchfork Land & Cattle Co.

In addition to being a committed Century Club member since graduating, he has also supported Texas A&M through several major gifts: The Steve Brauer, Jr. ’02 Faculty Fellowship in Mechanical Engineering, a President’s Endowed Scholarship in the College of Agriculture, an Endowed Aggie Ring Scholarship and most recently an Endowed Century Club gift. “No other university has the deeply engaged alumni base the Aggies are known for,” he said. “The Association is the steward of that most sacred tradition and the reason we’re called former students and never former Aggies.”

Doug Chester attributes his successful career to his experience at Texas A&M, partly because of the invaluable education he received, but also as a result of the friendships and connections he’s made along the way. “The common bond Aggies have, whether at work, at play or in the community, is something I will always cherish,” he said.

In particular, his time spent playing in the A&M Rugby Club gave him strong friendships and lifelong ties to the Aggie Spirit. “I’m still friends with many of those I played with,” he said. “The camaraderie and spirit have been what has stuck with me through the years.”

Doug had been a Century Club member for 36 years and wanted to ensure future students would have similar university experiences and build successful lives after they graduated. With the help of his company’s matching gifts program, he and his wife, Donna, established an Endowed Century Club gift. “Texas A&M is a special place, with its long history of traditions that are continuing today. It is important to make sure they continue for generations to come.”

Doug graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering and has worked for BHP Billiton for almost nine years, now serving as drilling manager. The couple resides in Katy and are proud parents of two children, Ryan and Danielle.

A member of the Class of ’68 made a commitment to the Endowed Century Club on behalf of his class. His desire is that this gift will encourage others in his class, and in other classes, to make a generous contribution as well.

Class of '70 Gift

In association with their class’ 35th Anniversary in 2005, the Class of ’70 has generously given to the Endowed Diamond Century Club program, as well as funded a Sul Ross Corps Scholarship and an Aggie Spirit Endowment. When the Class of ’70 was attending Texas A&M University, there were clubs such as horseshoes, bowling and gymnastics. It was a time of Vanity Fair and sweethearts. The Class of '70 saw such milestones as the tallest bonfire to date, standing at 107 feet and 10 inches, and they dealt with the loss of Texas A&M University’s President J. Earl Rudder. They add another milestone by becoming the first class to give to The Endowed Diamond Century Club program. Times have changed for the Class of ’70, but their loyalty and support of Texas A&M University and The Association of Former Students has not.

For the Class of ’70 it was not a matter of what we wanted to give back, but that we needed to give back. We wanted to make sure that the donation was used in the most productive manner and we feel that there is a real “bang for your buck” in the way The Association of Former Students uses our gifts. Even though the majority of our class is former Corps, we have some faithful non-regs as well as children that are not in the Corps, and we felt that giving back to The Association, all Aggies could enjoy the benefits.
