It's certainly evident why this region of the Mediterranean was so influential through the millennia. The reminders of its ancient glories are everywhere and reveal the sophistication and power of earlier civilizations. The Pyramids of Giza in the desert near Cairo are engineering marvels and the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World. Tartous, once a stronghold of the Kings Templar, remains partially enclosed and protected by a medieval wall. Strategically located Haifa still serves as a gateway to Galilee and Nazareth, the cradle of Christianity. The octagonal Red Tower dominates the skyline of Alanya, just as it has since the 13th century, when it was built to defend the vital Seljuk dockyard. The past is ever present and inescapable, which makes exploration easy and joyous.
