Mr. Davis was born October 17, 1937, in Waco, TX, to Edwin Davis and Bess Barlow Davis. Dave grew up in Waco, TX, graduating in 1956 from La Vega High School, where he played tight end as Co-Captain of the football team and served as President of the senior class. Dave also joined the National Guard while in high school.

From the age of ten, Dave wanted to be a petroleum engineer. Thanks to generous support from Waco McLennan County A&M Mothers’ Club and Texas A&M Opportunity Award scholarships, he enrolled at Texas A&M in 1956. At A&M, he was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets, serving as the commanding officer of Company B Engineers, and was honored to be selected as a member of the exclusive Ross Volunteers honor guard. Dave graduated with honors in 1960 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. He loved the military aspect of the Corps, and remained a dedicated Aggie for the rest of his life.

Dave was extremely patriotic and served as an officer in the United States Army on active duty from 1962 to 1967 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and Ft. Hood, Texas.

Upon graduation, Dave went to work as a petroleum engineer for Union Producing Company. In 1967, when Pennzoil bought Union, Dave was brought to Lafayette as District Engineer in charge of oil & gas offshore operations. In 1975, Dave joined Cotton Petroleum Corp. as Division Production Manager. Dave formed an independent oil & gas production company in 1986, where he worked until he retired in 2017. Dave was also a former President of the Petroleum Club of Lafayette.

Dave’s faith was his highest priority. One of his favorite verses was Romans 12:2- “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.” He took that seriously and was a great witness for Christ in the way he lived. He was a deacon and active member of First Baptist Church, Lafayette.

Dave’s other highest priority was his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 62 years, Joy Beth Willis, and was a supportive, loving father and great provider to his children and their families.

Dave was a natural leader. He was an honorable, joyful, confident, peaceful person who was privately philanthropic with a huge heart for others’ needs. Dave was a loyal friend, who truly treasured his friendships, whether with classmates, co-workers, customers, or others. He made life more enjoyable for those around him and was loved and respected by all who knew him. After Dave’s career moved him from Texas, he fell in love with the people, food, outdoors, and other aspects of South Louisiana and immensely enjoyed his life.

Dave was athletic and remained physically active until his mind and body made new plans. He was an avid tennis player, playing in and leading many World Oilmen Tennis Tournaments. Dave also enjoyed working out at Red’s, hunting and fishing in beautiful locations, and playing occasional golf.

Dave is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joy Beth Willis Davis; his daughter, Beth Davis Boehm (and husband, Dr. Trey Boehm), who reside in Waco, TX; his son, Ben David Davis (and wife, Julie Davis), who reside in Austin, TX; six grandchildren (in birth order), Parker Davis Rountree (and husband, Steven), Henry Boehm, Alexandra Davis, Davis Boehm, Cate Davis, and Carter Boehm; and one sister, Eleanor Ruth Davis.

Dave is predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Virginia Davis Hutto and her husband, Leonard (surviving children, Louann Hutto Williams and Greg Hutto), and Mary Colleen Haak and her husband, Jerry (surviving children, Kathleen Haak and Dr. Lee Haak).

The Davis family would like to extend heartfelt appreciation for the dedicated service from his primary caregiver, Shameika Warren. She was a blessing to Dave and his family, and he was happy to the end largely thanks to her devoted presence.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Dave to First Baptist Church, 1100 Lee Avenue, Lafayette, LA, 70501.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. John Bolin, Luther Burney, Oliver Carmichael, Jim Davidson, Danny Dobbs, Butch Pressley, the late Kioke Ringo, and Billy Tew.
