Daniel Ignacio Galvan

July 31, 1931 - January 26, 2023

Daniel Ignacio Galvan, age 91, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2023 in Sugarland, Texas in the presence of family. He was preceded in death by his father Augustin, mother Esperanza and wife Blanca. He is survived by his children Linda Galvan, Daniel Galvan and Patricia Davidson. He was a loving and devoted grandfather to his four cherished grandchildren; Richard Davidson, Lauren Davidson, Alexander Galvan, William Galvan and great-granddaughter Charlotte Davidson.

Daniel was born on July 31st, 1931 in San Antonio, Texas. His family moved to Laredo, Texas where he graduated from Martin High School. A proud Aggie to the end, Daniel graduated from Texas A&M in 1954. After college Daniel was commissioned into the U.S. Army and served in several postings in the United States and Europe. He also served in the U.S. Army reserve, ending his service with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

In 1955 Daniel married his college sweetheart Blanca Peña. As a symbol of mutual devotion they renewed their wedding vows on their 25th wedding anniversary and they remained married for 54 years. He lost the love of his life when Blanca passed away in August of 2009.

After leaving active duty in the military Daniel began a long career in government service. As a dedicated public servant he worked for the Social Security Administration, the Department of Labor and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Daniel ended his more than three decade career at the Office for Civil Rights for HHS. He received many awards and accolades during his career, but his true passion was helping others. He was able to live his values of equity, justice and service through his work.

Daniel was a devout Catholic. Together, he and Blanca attended St. Paul the Apostle Catholic church for 40 years. Seeing a need in the community, Daniel was one of the founders of the Spanish language mass and choir at St. Paul’s. One of his great joys was singing in the choir.

The church choir was not Daniel’s only outlet for his love of music. For many years he sang with the Plano Men of Note barbershop chorus. He loved performing with the group in venues large and small including the “lunch bunch” that gathered weekly at a local restaurant and surprised other diners by breaking out in song. Both Daniel and Blanca treasured the many friends they had in the group.
