James Wesley Haney

July 31, 1931 - January 6, 2023

James Wesley Haney, 91 of Woodstock, GA passed away peacefully on January 6, 2023. Though dealing with advanced dementia, Jim knew his family and was able to call their names until his death. They felt they never fully lost him to this terrible disease, and he was with them to the end.

Born to William Clyde Haney and Clara Neches Vanover Haney and raised in Beaumont, TX, Jim was an active and energetic boy. As a man he was dedicated to his family and fiercely passionate about building.

After he graduated in 1953 from Texas A&M University with a degree in Architectural Engineering, he served two years in the United States Air Force. He landed his first job with Kilgore Construction Company as a construction manager. This kick started his career as an Atlanta home builder. The main body of his work was with Southmark Communities, where he was the Vice President of Construction. He served as the President of the Atlanta Home Builders Associatioin 1971, and was voted Home Builder of the Year.

Jim married his wife, Frances Evelyn Thompson in 1961, and together they raised three sons. He was a strong, kind, loving, and supportive father. His knowledge and guidance were the foundation of his family. He taught his sons to hunt and fish, and he enjoyed participating in their sports activities.

He was passionate about handball, tennis, and racket ball, and was a fierce competitor. It was not unusual for him to outscore men far younger than himself.

With the encouragement of his boss, Dick Carpenter, and through Bill Gothard Family Life Seminar, Jim and Frances rededicated their lives to the Lord and to their family. They became active members of their church home Riverside Church Atlanta, and later Grace Community Baptist Church in Palatka, FL. Upon their return to Atlanta, they attended Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Jim was an active member of the Gideon Bible Society.

During his retirement years he enjoyed helping others, and regularly volunteered in church sponsored groups that assisted those in need. He was instrumental in helping Grace Community build their fellowship hall. He also loved to accompany his grandsons during hunting and fishing trips, and to watch them participate in team sports. He relished family gatherings, especially on the back deck in Woodstock, and was known for his healthy appetite and quick wit.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances; sons, Beau (Laurie), Scott (Lucy), and Brett; grandsons, Colton, Jonah, and Ian; his brother, Merlin; and nieces and nephews: Sherri, Kim, Pepper, Kevin, Brittany, Joshua, and Piper. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Vaughn; grandchildren, Callye and Caleb, and niece, Jennifer.

His memorial service will be at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA on Saturday, January 21 at noon, with burial following at Green Lawn Cemetery. Family visitation and reception will precede from 10:00-11:45 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Texas A&M Association of Former Students.
