John Woods Day

July 7, 1950 - November 22, 2022

John Woods Day (aka Bud), native of Shreveport, Louisiana, was the middle son born to Phillip George Day and Lucille Webb Day on July 7, 1950. He departed to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 22, 2022, from College Station. Visitation will begin at 10am, with a Memorial Service with Military Honor at 11am, Friday, December 9, 2022, both at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center.

John spent his youngest days in Shreveport until he graduated from Byrd High School in 1968. He followed in his grandfather, uncles, and older brother's footsteps by attending Texas A&M University in College Station. While there, he became a proud member of the Fighting Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets and was a proud member of the nationally recognized Fish (Freshman) Drill Team. Upon graduation in 1972, with a degree in Marketing, he began a 20-year career in the U.S. Army.

While serving in the Army he was stationed overseas in both Germany and Korea, as well as in the U.S. John served as an Armor and Cavalry officer overseas as well as at numerous bases around the United States to include Fort Knox, KY; Fort Hood, TX; and Fort Lewis, WA. John retired in 1993with a rank of Major and returned to Texas.

John settled down in Huntsville, Texas as he started a 28-year career with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, working up to the position as Head Software Manager. Despite being a happy homebody, John reluctantly globetrotted the world by air, sea, and land. His adventures included repeat travel to South Korea and Israel, as well as unique trips to Japan and Bahrain; luxury cruises around the Caribbean and not-so-luxury tiger cruises aboard a Navy vessel from California to Hawaii; and multiple trips crisscrossing the U.S. from Florida to Alaska and in between.

John loved to watch Aggie baseball, hunt beast and fowl, complete thousand-piece puzzles, and read adventure novels. He also grudgingly enjoyed playing video games occasionally, including Pokémon. He appreciated good bourbon and good barbeque (and happy to claim the superiority of both Texas bourbon and BBQ over those produced by any other state!).

John was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Andrew Webb Day.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 33 years, Leslie Sue Comstock-Day and three sons and their families. Jason, Kelly, Danielle and Woods Day; Jeffrey, Christina, Savannah and Vivienne Day; and Scott, Ashley and T.C. Day (with one on the way). He is outlived by his brother Phillip, Jr. and Rose Marie Hubley Day (Phillip Day III and Jennifer Day-Nee) and sister-in-law, Brigette Day (Andrew, Christopher, and Matthew).
