Henry Matthew Haswell, Jr.

August 6, 1938 - October 9, 2022

Rev. Henry Matthew Haswell, Jr. was called to be with his Lord and Savior on October 9th, 2022 at 8 p.m. at his home in Sapiranga, RS, Brazil.

Visitation was held at the Presbyterian Church of Sapiranga at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 12 and the funeral service was at 4 pm followed by the burial at Cemitério Amaral Ribeiro. A live stream of the services was available via social media at Igreja Presbiteriana de Sapiranga.

Henry was born August 6, 1938, in Wellington, Texas, USA to Henry Matthew Haswell and Norma Stokes Haswell. At the age of five, Henry was diagnosed with Polio which left him with partial facial paralysis, but it never kept him from many activities which physicians said he could not do, like playing the saxophone and public speaking/ preaching.

Following his father's example, Henry graduated with a BS in Floriculture from Texas A&M University (Class of 1960).

In 1966 he became a member of Casa Linda Presbyterian Church in Dallas. It was the beginning of his love for Reformed doctrines.

Henry married Lottie Blanche Dibert, daughter of Charles David Dibert and Louise Watkins Dibert on May 14, 1966. In 1968 Henry became a candidate for ministry in the Southern Presbyterian Church (PCUS) in the North Texas Presbytery and attended Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. Upon graduation, Henry and Lottie were approved as candidates to be missionaries in Brazil. Henry was ordained to the Ministry of the Word on August 20, 1972, by Grace Presbytery in a worship service at Casa Linda Presbyterian Church. Henry and Lottie arrived in Brazil on Thanksgiving Day 1972 and during his ministry, he worked in the cities of Sao Luís, Petrolina, Sapucaia do Sul, Sapiranga, and the surrounding regions. Henry was instrumental in the planting or revitalization of the Presbyterian churches of Caratatiua, Vinhais, Petrolina, Juazeiro, Sapucaia do Sul. Canoas, Sapiranga, Sao Leopoldo, Caixias do Sul, Farroupilha and Taquara.

On October 5th, 2007 Henry was appointed Pastor Emeritus of Igreja Presbtieriana de Sapiranga where he remained until his passing and where he preached his final sermon on Sunday, May 2nd, 2022. Henry was passionate about evangelism and church planting with an emphasis on the importance of developing local lay leadership. He believed strongly in God's ability to enable men and women, regardless of their economic, educational or social status, to effectively serve and work to expand the Kingdom of God.

Henry was a loving father and husband. He prioritized family devotions and was almost always present at the dinner table for three meals a day with the family. Mealtime conversations frequently included discussions of the latest current events, spiritual and theological matters, history lessons, family stories, or just some fun inside family jokes. He had a witty sense of humor, unknown to many who didn't know him intimately. He frequently used his humor to break the tension of stressful moments.

Henry rarely went anywhere without his loving wife Lottie. The two were well known in town, especially in later years, as they shuffled through shops and restaurants arm in arm, and people would kindly say you couldn't tell who was helping who.

Henry is survived by his wife Lottie Blanche Haswell, son Henry Matthew Haswell III (Dawn Eileen), son Daniel Edward Haswell (Rachel Leggi Arrias), and five grandchildren Henry, Helena, Isabel, Olivia, and Arthur. He is also survived by his cousins Frank and Jeanette Stokes, John E. Stokes, Helen Jean Hyden, nephew Brian Ross, niece Jeanette McClellan Walker, and a multitude of children in the Faith. "I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase." I Corinthians 3:6
