John Allen Mays

February 4, 1937 - June 7, 2022

John Allen Mays was born in Palestine, TX on February 4th, 1937 to John Wesley Mays and Lucy Margaruette Lockley Mays. He passed away on June 7th, 2022 at the age of 85, after a stroke. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, daughter Gwendolyn Marie Mays Wilkins, son John Kyle Mays, seven grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

John (Johnny) Mays lived a wonderful life and had an incredible gift of spreading joy and making people around him feel special. He was a devoted husband, father, and friend and was an eternal optimist whose glass was always more than half full. John's ability to connect with people, share in their joy, and offer comfort in times of difficulty was his spiritual gift.

John and his loving wife of 63 years, Marilyn Ruth Dupree Mays, were members of First Baptist Church in Conroe for the last 50 years. At 8 years old, Johnny became a Christian and committed his life to sharing his faith and serving others. His decades of service as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and Children's ministry volunteer made an eternal impact on the lives of many.

Johnny Mays graduated from Galena Park High School in 1955 where he lettered in baseball and football. He then attended Texas A&M University in the class of 1959, joined the cadet corps, and earned a degree in Business Administration. Years later, he became a private pilot, commercial pilot, and certified flight instructor.

John's business career evolved from successful mortgage banker and real estate investor, to entrepreneur, and finally to manager of Montgomery County Airport (now Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport). As airport manager, his leadership was instrumental in bringing new economic development, a runway expansion, a precision instrument approach, and an Army Reserve helicopter battalion.

Throughout his life John had many hobbies and interests. He was a faithful Texas A&M sports fan, outdoorsman, golfer, and collector of old Fords and antique guns. He was involved in many charitable and community organizations, was President of the Conroe Noon Lion's Club, and never missed a chance to donate blood. And yet, he always prioritized time with family and friends.

John Allen Mays left a legacy of faith, family, fun, and friendship. His was a life well-lived.
