July 16, 1932 – August 16, 2022

Charles Burton Carpenter, age 90, passed away on August 16, 2022 in Austin, Texas. Charlie was born on July 16, 1932 in Palacios, Texas to James David and Beatrice Carpenter. As a proud graduate of Texas A & M University class of 1955 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Administration and a minor in Sociology.

Charles served as the Assistant County Agent of Bexar County and was elected Vice President of the Texas County Agents Association. He became a Mortgage Loan Appraiser for Prudential Insurance Co. serving 26 counties in Texas where he was quickly promoted to head up the Austin office. His experience analyzing and evaluating all types of real estate led him to open his own Commercial Real Estate Brokerage office in 1965 in the Austin Municipal Airport. He incorporated Carpenter & Associates in 1969 and grew his company to one of the largest commercial firms in Austin with over 40 full time employees and brokerage/investment agents. Charlie is considered one of the most respected in his field. All who worked with him knew his handshake was “good as gold”. He mentored hundreds of real estate agents in his career and developed shopping centers across Austin and malls throughout south Texas. He developed the landmark One Congress Plaza in partnership with Vantage.

He was a true gentleman, who loved his family and was a loyal friend whose faith in Jesus Christ was strong and evident throughout his life.

Preceded in death by his parents, brother James, and granddaughter Elizabeth Carpenter, Charlie leaves behind his wife Judy Allison Carpenter and children James and Mark Carpenter, Gary Ruggiano, Lynn Harrell, Sandy Atkins, and Clayton Harrell and their spouses as well as 21 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Charlie will be lying in state at Cook-Walden Funeral Home for visitation from 8 am – 5 pm Monday August 22nd at 6100 N. Lamar in Austin. Funeral Services will be held in the Smith Family Chapel at Riverbend Church at 4214 N. Capital of Texas Highway on Tuesday August 23 at 10:30 am followed by a reception at Austin Country Club. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations made to your favorite charity in his honor.
