Roll Call Tribute

Melanie Kaspar '88 July 21, 2022 10:49 AM updated: July 21, 2022 10:55 AM

Melanie D. Sessions Kaspar
July 8, 1966 – June 21, 2022

Mel. Compassionate doctor. Generous friend. Loving companion. Wonder woman.

Mel died Tuesday, June 21, 2022, of a heart attack at age 55. In the few short days following, the love and heartfelt emotion for her from the medical community and friends has been otherworldly. Mel deserved it all. No words can adequately contain Mel. She was a whirling dervish and did nothing at half measure. If not working, she was walking the dogs, cooking, riding her bike, cleaning (always something to clean), or enjoying the company of friends. And making lists. “There are things to do.” Melanie was a woman of integrity and honor. She was genuine and unapologetically herself. She had a style all her own. As a doctor, she put patients at ease and calmed their fears. She touched more people’s hearts than she ever knew. While a heart attack took her away from this world much too soon, her loving heart left a beacon of light for all in the community.

She was born July 8, 1966, to Roger and Geneva Sessions in Lakewood, Denver, Colorado and left us in Lakewood, Dallas, Texas. She grew up in Nacogdoches, then attended Texas A&M (‘88). She received her MD from and did her anesthesia residency at UT Southwestern, followed by a transplant fellowship at Baylor. She joined her partners at Physicians Anesthesia Practice in 1996. Mel was well respected in her field and at the various hospitals she worked at across Dallas.

Mel met her husband John at A&M and became best friends for life. Together, they enjoyed an active lifestyle and traveled the world. They could be seen daily cycling or walking in Lakewood with their dogs Tripper and Shiner close by their side.

Predeceased by her parents, she is survived by husband John, brothers Roger and Craig, and a large group of Sessions and Kaspar relatives in Texas and Louisiana. Mel loved sharing a good cocktail with friends. One of her favorites was an Indian Paintbrush: 3 parts gin, 2 parts fresh grapefruit, 1 part lime and 1 rosemary syrup. Shake til ice cold. Have one in her memory.
