James Calvin Brothers

June 19, 1946 ~ May 23, 2022

James Brothers, age 75, of College Station, passed away on May 23, 2022, in Conroe.

James Brothers, or as he liked to be called Jim, was born in Lamesa, Texas to Rosa Lee Chapman and Victor Vance Brothers on June 19, 1946. He grew up in Jal, New Mexico on the corner of 5th and I Street across from the city park. His father was a carpenter and built residential homes to support the oil refineries in Jal. After his mother died in 1950, he was raised by Mabelle Walthall Phillips, a local school teacher. Jim was the youngest of three children and had two older sisters, Rita and Linda.

After graduating from Jal High School in 1964, Jim began his 50-year career in the oil fields as a “rough neck” to put himself through college and quickly earned a position as the Company Man. Jim received his Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering, graduating with the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of ’74. Jim is best described as very detail-oriented: you don’t do anything in a hurry and you build it right the first time. Throughout his years as a Petroleum Engineer, Jim drilled wells around the world: from Michigan, Texas, Louisiana, the Gulf Coast, the Mediterranean, Kuala Lumpur, the North Sea, Egypt, Kuwait, Venezuela, Vietnam, and beyond.

Jim married his love Linda Joyce Davis on May 1, 1988 in Houston, Texas. Although long-time residents of Fairfield, they eventually built their dream home “Silver Ponds” in Anderson, Texas. Silver Ponds became a labor of love where they built their own slice of Heaven to spend time by the ponds, playing pool & dominoes, building bonfires, and enjoying time with their grandchildren. After retiring from his 20 years with Newfield Exploration Company, Jim and Linda settled down in College Station in 2014 to enjoy retirement.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents Victor Vance Brothers, Rosa Lee Chapman, Mabelle Walthall Phillips, and sister Rita Ann Zorn. Jim is survived by his wife of 34 years, Linda; his son Jason Brothers and wife Elizabeth of Harker Heights; his son Jarod Brothers and wife Kimberly of Houston; his daughter Darlene Douglas and husband Craig of San Angelo; his daughter Karen Saintignan and husband Harold of Stonewall, LA; and his sister Linda Janette Lewis and husband Gale of Fairfield. Jim is also survived by his 8 grandchildren (Josh, Codey, Amanda, Chase, Camdyn, Tristen, Everett, and Brooklyn) and 4 great-grandchildren (Rylie, Paisley, Kasen, Addyson).

The visitation will be held for friends and family at Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Center on Friday, May 27, 2022, at 11 a.m. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by interment at the Memorial Cemetery of College Station Aggie Field of Honor. Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers, Bryan-College Station.
