Nick Dokos
January 11, 1928 - May 10, 2022

Nick George Dokos, much beloved father, grandfather, and husband, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at the age of 94.

He was born January 11, 1928 in Houston, TX to George Nick Dokos and Katherine Tassos Dokos, both originally of Greece. As a first generation American, Nick worked hard, excelling in both academics and athletics. He graduated as valedictorian of his class from San Jacinto High School in Houston and was an All-State Football player.

Gifted in math and science, Nick earned his Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from University of Houston (‘51). In 1952, he married Clara Augusta Hermes of La Grange, and they began their life together while Nick served two years in the U.S. Army. He then attended Texas A&M University on the GI Bill, where he became an ardent Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of ‘57 (Whoop!), earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering and graduating with honors as a member of Tau Beta Pi. As a licensed and registered Petroleum Engineer with Shell Oil for 35 years, he initially oversaw the construction of oil refineries on the Louisiana Coast, and later, while based at Shell Headquarters in New Orleans, was a project manager for large offshore projects.

He was a die-hard football fan who, as an ex-player, watched the games with a critical eye to strategy, not just winning. A life-long athlete, Nick played baseball and football in his younger years, but is perhaps best remembered in La Grange for his long bike rides around town, which continued well into his late eighties.

Extraordinarily kind and with great generosity of spirit, he was a wonderful and supportive father to his and Clara’s five daughters, encouraging them to pursue their chosen careers in engineering, geology, veterinary medicine, architecture, and law. He was understanding and fair, had a great sense of humor, was a good listener, but didn’t suffer fools gladly. Even in the last months of his life he said, “Anyone who knows my character knows that I am someone who stands up for myself.”

Nick was joy personified. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Clara, and is survived by his five daughters and their husbands—Katherine and Harvey Fitzpatrick of Katy, TX; Kay and Jim Schrodt of Bakersfield, CA; Dr. Karen Dokos Roof and Dr. Randy Roof of Seabrook, TX; Karyl Dokos of La Grange, TX; Kelli Dokos of Richardson, TX—as well as ten adoring grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations. Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society; P.O. Box 81795, Austin, TX 78708 or to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, P. O. Box 567, La Grange, TX 78945.
