John Frederick Schaffer, III
August 9, 1940 - April 20, 2022

John Frederick Schaffer III, 81 years old, passed away April 20, 2022 at Brookdale Memory Care Willowbrook. John was born to John and Pauline Schaffer on August 9, 1940 in Tucson, Arizona. His family moved to El Paso, and John grew up an active member of 4H, spending his time raising sheep and working on his father’s 1919 Oldsmobile. John graduated from El Paso High School in 1958, and attended Texas A&M University, obtaining a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1962.

Having a goal to move up the ranks in the oil business he decided to attend law school. He married his college sweetheart Cinda Ellis and they moved to Austin, Texas. Always industrious, John would set a trotline in the Colorado River every morning before going to class and then bring home the catfish he caught for Cinda to cook while he studied that night. Hard work paid off and he received his degree from the University of Texas Law school in 1965. John did work in the oil business for a short time, but it was in law school that he found his true passion and decided to follow his heart and pursue a career as an Attorney.

In 1966, John moved his wife and young daughter to Seabrook, Texas to partner with his old Aggie buddy, Charlie Marshall, and start his new career. While the early years were “sparse” they did yield the foundation of a successful law practice and a new son to boot.

John moved the family in 1973 to the quickly expanding Champions area (back when Cypresswood Parkway was just the two lane, Farm to Market Road 1960.) John’s career as a Civil Trial Specialist evolved over the years, but the constant themes were “sticking up for the little guy” and “placing more emphasis on doing the right thing than padding his pockets.” Despite his divorce from Cinda in 1988 they remained friends, usually meeting for lunch once a week in the final years of his life.

John was an avid soccer fan and was passionate about bringing the sport to the area, lending his time to coaching, refereeing and organizing. He also kept busy in the woodshop in the back of his law office condo, creating amazing things with his woodworking.

For those lucky enough to have met John, they remember his sense of humor, kindness and integrity. Unless of course their intentions were less than forthright, then they undoubtedly would get an earful and lose the argument. John is preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Walker, his brothers Don Dixon and Jim Dixon. He is survived by his sister, Lilyanne Moody-Cowherd, daughter Lisa Hickey, son John F. Schaffer IV, grandchildren Suzanne Hickey and Jase Hickey.

John's warmth, wisdom, and wit will be missed very much by his family and friends. A memorial service honoring his life will be determined at a later date, but in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The Lewy Body Dementia Association at lbda.org
