John Patrick Heye
June 23, 1966 - April 12, 2022

John Patrick Heye, age 55, went to be with the Lord on April 12, 2022, in San Antonio, TX, after bravely battling cancer for a year.

John was born June 23, 1966, in Boston, Massachusetts, to his loving parents, Paul and Mary Catherine (Dunn) Heye. He lived in many different places growing up in an Air Force family. He graduated from Beavercreek High School in Ohio in 1984. John spent 4 years in the Corps of Cadets, Squadron 16, and graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s of Environmental Design in 1988.

John began his 32-year career at the Texas Department of Transportation in Pleasanton as a designer and later moved to Information Technology, in San Antonio, where he met the love of his life, Eileen Bunsey, who he affectionately referred to as “EB”. After a brief hiatus in the private sector due to IT being outsourced at TxDOT, John returned to the Plan Review Section for the remainder of his career.

John and Eileen were married January 10, 1998. He was overjoyed to become a father to Eileen’s two beautiful children, Megan and William. They would have their third child, Abby, who completed their family.

John’s greatest joy was always his family, especially his wife and children. John celebrated his daughter Megan’s wedding to Erik Avots last summer and was excited about becoming “Opa” to their son, due in June. John was always fascinated with the sea and started at Texas A&M majoring in Marine Biology. John and William obtained their Scuba diving certifications and went on amazing diving trips together, most notably in Belize. John and Abby were best buds. One of his proudest moments was when Abby was accepted into Texas A&M. They spent countless hours together watching many of their favorite TV shows, including ‘Sponge Bob’, ‘The Office’, and ‘Survivor’. It was their special time. John was also proud of Abby and Kylie for obtaining their SCUBA certifications as well. He cherished many years of beach trips with Eileen’s family (the Walls), and playing games with his siblings and their families during the Heye vacations. John and Eileen’s favorite pastime was antique shopping on many weekends with their best friends Wini and Larry. They filled their home with the many treasures they found.

John was a faithful Catholic and member of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion, along with Abby.

John was extremely artistic and loved to draw pictures on the thank you notes he wrote. He also hand painted other artwork. From early in his childhood, John enjoyed making people smile, and was very witty. He laughed often and enjoyed jokes, especially from his favorite comedian Brian Regan. He had diverse musical tastes, from Don Williams to the Pet Shop Boys and continually made music playlists for friends and family. He loved organization as was evidenced by his meticulous home and office.

John was preceded in death by his father, Paul Frederick Heye, and nephew Paul F. “Trey” Heye III. John is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 24 years, Eileen Heye, daughter Megan Avots (Erik) of Austin, son William Bunsey (Kylie Gurick) of San Antonio, and daughter Abby Heye of San Antonio; mother Mary Catherine Heye of San Antonio, brother Paul Heye, Jr. (Murell) of Jacksonville, Florida, sister Amy Dunlap (Brett) of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, and brother Jeff Heye (Amy) of College Station. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews who all loved him dearly.

Eileen would like to thank the many individuals that cared for John along with her, over these many months including her siblings, John’s siblings, close friends, and his TxDOT family. Included in our heartfelt gratitude is Dr. Manuel Santiago, his oncologist, and John’s nurses, PCA’s and staff at Methodist Hospital (Floor 8 East).

John will be remembered for his grace and courage during his battle with cancer. He always put others before himself and was a source of strength and support in times of need. His compassion and abiding love for his family and friends will never be forgotten.

SERVICES

The family will receive friends at Porter Loring Mortuary North (2102 North Loop 1604 E) from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2022. A Holy Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m.

A Mass will be celebrated at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church located at 1602 Thousand Oaks Dr., San Antonio, TX at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday April 23, 2022. Father Paul Cleary will officiate. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
