Charles R. Land

December 22, 1931 - February 4, 2022

Victoria, TX

Charles Russell Land passed peacefully from this life on February 4th, 2022. He was born on December 22, 1931 in Tyler, Texas to the late Myrtle Sloan Land and Cone Johnson Land.

Charlie graduated from Texas A&M University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife Management and remained a proud Aggie throughout his life.

He enjoyed employment with the Y.O. Ranch in Kerrville, TX, working with exotic and native animals and was very instrumental in developing the exotic wildlife program there.  Charlie’s years as a Wildlife Biologist with the Department of Fish and Game in Petersburg, Alaska were an enviable experience. He loved his job and loved exploring the wilds and waters of this beautiful state. Returning to Texas for retirement and the peace and quiet of the country place, Charlie enjoyed gardening and a beautiful and peaceful home life. He loved repairing antique tractors and hit-and-miss engines, and woodworking.  An avid outdoorsman, Charlie held a lifetime fascination of all elements of the natural world. He loved to hunt and was blessed with many opportunities through the years to follow this sport. Caring for his guns and reloading were very important throughout his life.

Charlie’s lifelong love of research and reading resulted in a knowledge of a wide range of content. As a schoolteacher, his Mother inspired him at a very young age to read and maintain an ongoing quest for knowledge. He was a devoted library patron and voracious consumer of books.

Left to treasure Charlie’s memory are his loving wife of 30 years, Rebecca Mutchler Land; daughter, Judy Towell (Rob); son, John Land; brother, Gary Land (Ann); stepdaughters, Carolyn Knox (Randy), Suzanne Stone (Ernest); stepsons, Shelby Fischer (Debbie), Sammy Fischer (Sherri), Sam McDaniel (Karen), and Willie McDaniel; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his son, Bruce Land.  Charlie treasured his very special friendships with Butch Young, Ernest Stone, and his loving brother, Gary Land.

In accordance with Charlie’s wishes, his remains were donated to the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center College of Medicine for the advancement of medical science.

Charlie was so dearly loved by all of his family and friends.
