James Milton Mathis
February 1, 1927 – January 2, 2022

Dr. James Milton Mathis, 94, passed away on January 2, 2022. Born in Upshur County, James was the first son of William Carl and Ruby Hart Mathis. He attended public schools at White Oak in Gregg County and Elysian Fields in Harrison County.

He served 22 months in the Navy training as a Combat Air Crewman. Before entering Texas A&M University he attended East Texas Baptist College and Kilgore Junior College. Enrolled in the Veterinary School at Texas A&M, he graduated in 1953.

He was in private practice for a year before being recruited as a Veterinary Meat Inspector for the United States Department of Agriculture. While in Federal Service he held supervisory and management positions in the southwest, Midwest and Washington, DC. He is credited with developing the operating procedures and becoming the first head of the Inplant Compliance Group for Meat and Poultry Inspection, operating nationwide from Lawrence, Kansas. Retiring in 1980, he established the first veterinary practice in Tarrant County exclusively for cats. He left active veterinary practice in 1999.

An active Deacon at Handley Baptist Church he was a Mason and a lifetime member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Mathis is preceded in death by his wife, Anita Wentrcek Mathis and his daughter, Lou Ann Mathis Moore.

Survivors: Son and daughter-in-law Mark and Julie Mathis of Fort Worth, sister Mary Frances Stembridge of North Richland Hills and three grandchildren.
