Thomas Walker Hewett
November 10, 1943 - September 6, 2021

Funeral services for Thomas “Tom” Walker Hewett, age 77, of Freeport, Texas will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, September 17, 2021 at New Beginnings Community Church in Lake Jackson with Pastor Andrew Dill officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation on the same day from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and cousin. He always put others before himself and loved spending time with family and friends. He was a true social person with a jovial spirit who liked people and had a great memory in retelling old family stories. He became a skilled researcher and recorder of his family’s genealogical ancestry. Most importantly, he was a devoted Christian who lived his life honoring Almighty God.

Tom was originally born November 10, 1943, in Wilmington, North Carolina. His family moved to Freeport in 1953 and became longtime members of the FUMC in Freeport. He graduated from Brazosport High School in 1962 and later attended Wharton Junior College and Texas A&M University in College Station where he studied architecture.

Tom served in active duty in the United States Army (1967-1970). He was a chaplain’s assistant during the Vietnam War, and later received the Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal for his achievements. Later Tom continued serving his country in the United States Army Reserve (1970-1973) before being honorably discharged.

Tom was a 33rd Degree Mason and longtime member of the Velasco Masonic Lodge No. 757 in Freeport, where he held several officer positions, including Grandmaster of the Lodge. He was also a faithful member of the Scottish Rite Freemasonry Valley of Galveston since 1985.

Tom was an avid fan of Texas A&M University athletics and a season ticket holder to Aggie football games for nearly 35 years. He was a proud member of the “Aggie Club” and Association of Former Students. Tom worked as a steamship agent for over 30 years before retiring and becoming a school bus monitor with the Brazosport Independent School District where he worked with special needs students.

Left to cherish Tom’s memory is his wife of 35 years, Sara “Sally” L. LeTourneau, sister Jackie Hewett Brewer (fiancé Butch Munnerlyn), son Thomas W. Hewett Jr. (wife Yesenia and daughter Genevieve), daughter Julie L. Dugan (husband Jim and daughters Jaye and Jenny), daughter Katherine Hewett, first cousin Bradley Roebuck (wife Kat) and sister-in-law Patsy Hewett. Tom is also survived by three nieces Georgianne Hewett, Laura Becker (son Michael and daughter Kristin) and Ashley O’Rourke (husband Joe and daughters Madison and Mackenzie).

He is preceded in death by his parents, Howard C. Hewett Sr. and Helen Roebuck Hewett, brother Howard C. Hewett Jr., sister Reba Gray Hewett, grandson Sebastian T. Hewett and brother-in-law Ronald Brewer.

A reception for family and friends will follow in the FUMC Fellowship Hall. A private interment will take place at a later date at the Houston National Cemetery.

Tom’s family would like to give a sincere thanks and appreciation to staff at IPH Home Health Care and Hospice, Caring Senior Service, Revered Texan Hearth and Home in Lake Jackson and members of the FUMC in Freeport for their love and support in caring for him over the last year.

In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the First United Methodist Church (1600 West Broad Street, Freeport, TX, 77541), the Hewett Endowment Fund, which benefits ministerial and theological continuing education for women (Texas Methodist Foundation, 11709 Boulder Lane, #100, Austin TX, 78726) or Shriners Hospital for Children-Texas (815 Market Street, Galveston, TX, 77550).
