Sammy Ray Cunningham
June 9, 1936 – September 20, 2021

Sammy Ray Cunningham, Sr., age 85, passed away peacefully on Monday September 20, 2021 in San Antonio, Texas. Sam was born in Cherryvale, Kansas to parents John Ralph and Mildred Furnish Cunningham. Sam was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather who was loved greatly and will be dearly missed.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and beloved wife of 52 years, Georgia Fetherolf Cunningham.

Sam is survived by his 5 children: Georgia English Orena (Robert), Paul English (Lynette), Sam R. Cunningham, Jr. (Kim), Timothy L. Cunningham, and Tonya English Jackson. Sam leaves 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Sam was dedicated to the Spirit of Aggieland! Graduating with a BBA from the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets in 1958 and receiving a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Sam spent 50 years in a successful insurance sales and management career servicing many thousands of clients and responsible for recruiting, hiring and training hundreds of agents for successful insurance sales careers. Sam obtained the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation in 1976 while he was the agency manager for Mutual Of New York in San Antonio.

For years, Sam was an active member of the General Agents and Managers Association, the Central Park Chapter of the San Antonio Lions Club, and the San Antonio A&M Club. Sam was a Christian who loved the Lord and was a member of the Shearer Hills Baptist Church. Everyone who knew Sam loved him. He had a special way of drawing people to him with his big sense of humor and his jovial laugh that was larger than life!

A graveside service for family and close friends will be held at 11:00am, October 18, 2021, at Sunset Memorial Cemetery, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, TX 78218.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to CUREPSP (www.psp.org) to fund critical research efforts that specialize in finding treatments and a cure for PSP (Progressive-Supranuclear Palsy), or the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets through the Texas A&M Foundation (www.txamfoundation.com).
