Robert Thomas "Tom" Sweatman
March 26, 1940 – September 5, 2021
Robert Thomas (Tom) Sweatman, 81, died on Sunday, September 5, 2021 in Abilene, Texas. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Donna of 31 years and sister Diane. He is survived by his son, Len Sweatman of Austin; daughter, Molly Bechler '88 of Burnet;
sister, Carol Pitts of Midland; close friend and former wife, Eileen Hale of Round Rock; ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and six close nephews.
Tom was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated from Paschal High School in Fort Worth. He conducted the Tommy Sweatman Dance Band his senior year.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1963 from Texas A&M University, Tom enjoyed a long career in the electric utility industry. Following his job of Manager of Power Plant Construction for TXU, he become the first Chief Engineer
of the Texas Public Utility Commission in 1975. In 1986, he became the first Executive Director of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). Following his retirement, he was Project Manager for the construction of ERCOT’s new facilities in Austin
and Taylor. He was a Registered Professional Engineer.
While in Aggieland, Tom was in the Aggie Corps of Cadets, played saxophone and led the Aggieland Orchestra, and earned an officer’s commission in the US Army. In 1964-66 he was a lieutenant and Electronics Branch Manager at Fort Bliss, Texas.
Tom’s faith was strong. He believed God loved him, and he accepted Jesus Christ as his savior.
Tom’s family was his greatest pride, continuing to fill his life until his passing. Len and Molly and their families kept an eye on their dad as he aged, assisting whenever he needed something. He enjoyed spending time with his dear companion, Sandra Beebe
in addition to many lifelong friends, neighbors and the undying love of his last two dogs, Aggie and Sunshine. Visitation will be held Monday, September 13, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home. Funeral Services will begin
at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with graveside services immediately following.
