John Harold Bannworth passed away on August 23, 2021, at the age of 83 after a lengthy illness. He had been battling several health issues recently but faced them defiantly until his passing on Monday.

John was a south Texas native and prominent fresh produce, grower, and shipper. In addition to an active business and personal life, John also participated in several fresh produce associations during his long agricultural career.

Born and raised in Mission Texas, he played football for the McAllen high school Bulldogs and his star-studded team went to the State championship. After high school, he attended Texas A&M as a member of the Corp of Cadets, graduating with a bachelor’s degree before being commissioned as an officer in the US Air Force, both stateside and overseas.

Following the Air Force, John returned to the Rio Grande valley with his family, joining his family business in La Joya, Texas.

John was the son of the late Harold & Nola Clay Bannworth. He is survived by 5 children, Stephen Bannworth (Stephanie) of Kennewick, WA., Deborah Bannworth of Atlanta, GA. Morgan Bannworth (Flor) of Zapata, TX, Pamela Garcia of McAllen, TX., and Yadira Palacios of McAllen, TX. He is also survived by a sister, JoAnn Bannworth, 4 grandchildren (Patrick, Ryan, Sophia, and Morgan Wyatt), one great grandchild, Charlotte, as well as multiple nieces & nephews.

John will be honored during a funeral service with military honors at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery on September 3, 2021, at 10:00 AM in an outdoor covered area. A more private graveside service will follow for immediate family. The family kindly requests all attendees to wear masks.

Viewing and family visitation will be held prior to the service, at the Kreidler Funeral Home, on September 3 from 8:00 AM - 9:45 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the John H. Bannworth Memorial Fund at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
