Rhoda Danielle Segur
March 23, 1940 - August 3, 2021

Rhoda Danielle Segur, 81, of Keeseville passed away peacefully after a sudden illness on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at the UVM Health Network - CVPH, Plattsburgh. At the time of her passing, she was spending the summer near Keeseville, NY, as she did almost every year for many years.

She was born in Denver, Colorado on March 23, 1940, the daughter of Robert Daniel and Ruth (Winsor) Segur.

Rhoda earned her BA in Sociology and Anthropology from Pennsylvania State University. She moved to Mexico at the age of 19, where she married Charles Stover Fletcher, Jr, an archeologist. During the 25 years she lived in Mexico, Central America, and South America, Rhoda started a school for English language learners in San Juan Teotihuacan, taught English to elementary school students at the Instituto Ovalle Monday in Mexico City, and earned a Certification in Spanish from and taught at the Instituto Mexicano Norteamericano de Relaciones Culturales. She also went on to earn a Master of Arts in Linguistics and Spanish at the State University of New York at Buffalo. After returning to the United States for good in 1984, she taught Spanish at Blinn Community College in Bryan, Texas and Brenham, Texas, and served as a translator and interpreter for multiple organizations in a professional and volunteer capacity. Rhoda taught hundreds (if not thousands) of people Spanish and English during her long career as an educator and translator.

Rhoda was a Renaissance woman, lifelong learner, and supporter of the arts, especially theater. She painted beautifully, played the clarinet, and was fluent in Spanish. She loved language and delighted in learning new words and sharing them with other people. She could still beat her children and grandchildren at Bananagrams and Scrabble through the last year of her life! Rhoda was also an adventurer. She loved to travel and visited all 50 US states, Europe, South America, the Caribbean, and Mexico. She was always looking for new opportunities to meet new people and learn new things.

Spirituality was also important to Rhoda. She was an active member of the Episcopal Church and she enjoyed volunteering and organizing church activities. She was a member of Christ Church Episcopal in Mexico City, St. Thomas Episcopal Church in College Station, Texas and attended services at St. Paul’s in Keeseville, NY during summers in the Adirondacks.

Many people who knew her will also remember Rhoda’s generosity. She was always finding ways to help others both in a personal capacity and through organized volunteering efforts. If someone needed help running an errand, achieving a personal goal, or meeting their basic needs of food and shelter, she was there to help no matter how big or small the challenge. She also volunteered as a translator for the Dominican Republic Medical Mission of St. Eustace Episcopal Church in Lake Placid, NY, and volunteered with the Brazos Valley Church Pantry, the Brazos Interfaith Immigration Network and as an election polls volunteer in Bryan and College Station, Texas.

Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Daphne Louise and her husband Larry Kichta, her three children, Leonora Leah Fletcher, Adrian Daniel Fletcher and his wife Sally Ann, and Cristina Susana Labyer and her husband George Sowden. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: Sabine Ruth Fletcher, James Alexander Labyer, Eleanor Katharine Fletcher, Patrick Hayes Fletcher, and Charley Elizabeth Fletcher. She is dearly missed.

In addition to her parents, Rhoda was predeceased by her brothers, Douglas Louis Segur and Josef W. Segur.

Honoring her wishes, all services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Rhoda Danielle Segur may be made to the Dominican Republic Medical Mission of St. Eustace Episcopal Church in Lake Placid, NY, 2450 Main St, Lake Placid, NY 12946.

Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 124 Clinton Street, Keeseville, 834-7667.
