Max Bear Engram
January 9, 1983 - July 17, 2021
The world lost a great man and a great laugh on July 17, 2021, with the untimely passing of Max Bear Engram. Max was born on January 9, 1983, to Sandy and Kim Engram in Amarillo, Texas, where he spent his childhood, graduating from Amarillo High School in 2002, before getting a degree in Political Science from his beloved Texas A&M in 2007. He spent the remainder of his life in Austin. Max married Bethany Hughes of Barrington, Rhode Island on August 31, 2018.
While some knew him as Max and some knew him as Bear, the one thing everyone who knew him has in common is that they wanted to be in his presence as often as possible. A genuine affability, an irreplicable laugh, and a completely unpredictable wit, a moment with Max was a memory made; he had a heartfelt way of engaging with people that made you feel like you mattered.
With a mind like a Mad Lib, Max will indefinitely be remembered for his trademark turns of phrase that were simultaneously nonsensical and yet, from Max, made perfect sense; sayings so unexpected they’re unforgettable, and anyone who knew him can rattle off a handful of favorites without pause.
He loved to fish, college football Saturdays, and dominating a good old-fashioned game of washers. But Max cherished nothing more than family; the one he was born into and the one he built around him along the way. Because that was the thing about Max, once he was in your life, he would forever have a place in it. You wanted him to be a part of everything, because he made everything just a little bit better, jollier, and of course, more quotable.
There will never be another like Max and this world will never be quite the same, but we can all honor his memory by living his mantra: You’ve got to take the time to take the time.

Max is survived by his wife Bethany of Austin; his parents, Kim Engram of Austin, and Sandy Engram of Amarillo; his mother- and father-in-law, Joyce and Greg Hughes of Barrington, RI; his sister Cherri Johnson and husband John of Tallahassee, sister Ginger Inskeep and husband Clark of Amarillo, brother Brad Lee Dennington of Nashville; brother-in-law Scott Hughes and wife, Emily L. Hughes, and brother-in-law Brian Hughes and wife, Emily K. Hughes, all of Barrington, RI; and several nieces and nephews. It would be remiss to not also mention the Key Sanford family, who thought of Max as one of their own.
Services celebrating Max’s life will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 23, 2021, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, 2800 Paramount Blvd., Amarillo, Texas. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Austin Animal Center, where Max rescued his beloved dog, Tragen.
