Luther Edward Harvill, Jr. was born in Alice, Texas, on March 27, 1933, to the late Luther Edward Harvill, Sr and Eula (Newton) Harvill. He grew up in the South Texas brush country of Duval County and the sand hills of the Permian Basin. After graduating from high school in Odessa, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University, where he served as an assistant drum major of the Texas Aggie Band. He went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Education from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. Ed was married to his wife, Melba, for over 50 years. In the early years, Ed worked for noted cutting horse trainers Buster Welch and Matlock Rose and, for a time, managed the Cowden Brothers M Bar Ranch north of Goldsmith, Texas. A quarter horse breeder for more than 50 years, he served on the Wichita County Extension Horse Committee and as President of the Wichita Valley Horseman’s Association. He organized trail rides around the Wichita Falls area for 20 years. He ran the Wichita Station feed store from his home for a number of years, supplying feed for multiple types of animals in the Iowa Park area. Ed was a school teacher for 27 years, 22 of those years teaching middle schoolers in Wichita Falls. He enjoyed doing Will Rogers impersonations and wrote his own book of cowboy poetry, The Bona Fide Cowboy, in 2012. He won poetry writing awards and recited poetry for various North Texas groups, including civic, social and church groups and cowboy poetry gatherings.

Along with his parents, Ed was preceded in death by a stepson, Sherman T. “Buddy” Lindley III.
