Verland Lee Granberry
July 17, 1952 - April 13, 2021

Verland Lee Granberry, 68, of Cuero passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2021. He was born July 17, 1952 in Yoakum to Harry Lee and Mary Louise “Sally” Hansel Granberry. He married Deborah Mann on July 17, 1976 in Wellborn. He earned his B.S in 1975 and M.S. in 1977 both from Texas A&M University. He then went on and obtained his M.S. in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Houston in 1994. Verland was a drilling engineer for Chevron for 35 years. His most recent work was in Venezuela and Angola, and he made lasting friendships in these countries.

Verland was a shy, quiet man which made him a good listener. He had a special love for the elderly and made many friendships in diverse cultures at home and across the world. He was a servant at heart and found many inconspicuous ways to help others, often with his tractor in tow! Verland put his faith in Christ at about the age of twelve, and made a trip to Israel as a college student which helped encourage him in his faith. He served as a deacon in the Baptist Church. Mission trips took him to Mexico, Wyoming, Nebraska and Texas. Most recently he especially enjoyed working at Lockhart Community Cemetery and made special friendships there.

Verland grew up tinkering with old farm equipment and loved working outside. He felt that “Every man should have a tractor,” and was happiest when driving his. Gardening, mowing and raising goats were his hobbies. Having played football in high school, he especially enjoyed cheering on the Gobblers.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Deborah; son, Jared Granberry of Houston; sisters, Yisleta Boterf of Yoakum and Lorraine (Norman) Haisler of Katy; brother, Kelsey (Bettie) Granberry of Bay City; nephews, Reagan (Erin) Haisler of Houston and William (Liz) Haisler of Waxhaw, North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Jerry Boterf.

Verland leaves a legacy of kindness and giving, both of himself and his resources. Acts 10:4…”Your prayers and alms have ascended as a memorial before the Lord.”

The family appreciates the kind, loving care they have received from AlzCare of DeWitt County in the last months of Verland’s life.

Visitation will be held Thursday, April 22, 2021, 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Freund Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Friday, April 23, 2021, 10 AM at First Baptist Church of Cuero with Dr. Glenn Robertson officiating. Interment will follow at Hebron Cemetery.
