Roy F. Northrup, 83, of Amarillo, died May 7, 2021.

Services will be 3:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Arrangements are with Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount.

Roy, the son of Bert Northrup and Tince Willyard Northrup, was born September 24, 1937, in Higgins, Texas located in Lipscomb County. His grandparents homesteaded in the Bishop community. His parents farmed in this area until the early 1940s. Roy’s parents worked on the Kritser Ranch in Hemphill County until the late 1940s. In 1948, his family moved to the town of Canadian and settled in Amarillo in June 1950. He absolutely loved this land the people of the Panhandle with a bond that never lessened his desire to live here his entire life. He played football for the Sandies. Roy attended Austin Junior High and was a 1957 graduate of Amarillo High. He had scholarship offers to play for several colleges and universities. Roy was recruited by the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant to play football for the fighting Texas Aggies, where he was a three-year letterman and elected captain by his teammates his senior year. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1961. While attending Texas A&M, he married his high school sweetheart, Dena Goldston. They were married for 32 years and raised five children before divorcing. In 1995, Roy married Dolly Hankins who preceded him in death on August 26, 2016.

After graduation, Roy returned to Amarillo where he was the co-owner and manager of Amarillo Seed House. From this business, he developed his love of gardening which has continued all his life. In 2000, Roy began a career in real estate with Coldwell Banker First Equity and is currently a licensed realtor. Roy was so grateful for the clients who trusted him through these years with the privilege of selling and purchasing homes for them.

Roy was a member of First Christian Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Herman and his second wife, Dolly.

Roy loved his family and was a devoted father to his children. Survivors include his first wife, Dena Goldston; sons, Kyle Northrup, Michael Northrup and husband Ben Wilkins, Patrick Northrup and wife Karen; daughters, Katie Goldston and partner Phil Bonsal, Dena Beth Hodan and husband John; his sister, Glenda Neill and husband Don. “Poppyseed” had many precious memories with his 7 grandchildren, Kaitlyn Tedrick and husband Trevor, Chloe, Payton and wife Megan, Kade, Ashley Stribling and husband Corey, Hannah and Maggie. He was adored by his 5 nieces.

If desired, friends may make memorial donations to First Christian Church or Downtown Women’s Center.
