Obituary of Samuel L. Sullivan Jr. Ph D, P. E., Captain US Army retd.
Samuel L. Sullivan, Jr., passed away peacefully April 23, 2021.

He was born May 25, 1935, in Port Lavaca, Texas, to Samuel L. Sullivan and Rose Garner Sullivan. He graduated from Port Lavaca High School and Texas A&M University with three degrees.

Sam was an emeritus professor at Tulane University where he taught Chemical Engineering for almost four decades. He also served as Associate Dean of the School of Engineering. He was an emeritus member of the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board, past board chair, vice chair and secretary. Sam was active with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying with a continuing commitment to the advancement of engineering licensure.

In 1998 he received the Distinguished Service Award from NCEES and in 2013 the Distinguished Examination Service Award. He was an exam writing volunteer for almost 25 years. Sam’s passion for engineering and higher education led him to establish the Dr. Samuel Sullivan, Jr. 57 Scholarship for Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University. Sam enjoyed his work and followed the careers of many of his students. He took great pride in their achievements. Sam also enjoyed hunting and gardening, especially at his place in Mississippi.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his four children: Colleen Winkler (Robert), Charleen Dickson (Buddy). Suzanne Clark (Clarence), and Mark Sullivan (Roxanna); and by four grandsons: Christopher Audler, Aaron Rader, Clinton Clark, Samuel C. Sullivan, and two step-grandsons, Casey Clark and Linc Clark.

In addition, he is survived by seven great grandchildren. Sam is also survived by his companion of over 40 years Marcelle d’Aquin Saussy, her three children: Gordon Saussy (Pam), Marcelle Sjostrom and Virginia Saussy, and two grandchildren: Parker Saussy and Heather Sjostrom. A private family service will be held at a later date.
