Carolyn Darice Emmett Marshall, Ph.D
February 9, 1930 - April 21, 2021

Carolyn Darice Emmett Marshall, Ph.D., died Wednesday, April 21, in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Marshall was born in Pontiac, Michigan, February 9, 1930, to Robert Emmett and Helen Rowley Emmett. She was the best wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend in the world.

She will be deeply missed. Carolyn married Thomas Donald Marshall on June 14, 1949. She graduated from Indiana University in 1951, with a bachelor’s degree in Education. In 1985, she earned a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Texas School of Public Health, and in 1994, she earned a doctorate in Adult Education and Anthropology from Texas A&M University, College Station.

From 1957 to 1972, Carolyn assisted her husband, Dr. Thomas D. Marshall, in his private dental practice in Indianapolis, Indiana.

From 1985 to 2001, she served as Clinical/Community Education Specialist, South Texas Geriatric Education Center, Department of Dental Diagnostic Science, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Carolyn was the Project Coordinator for “A Partnership in Aging: Geriatric Education Resource Manual for Community and Professional Programs.” Her other professional activities and experience at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio included Clinical Assistant Professor and Clinical Associate Professor, both in the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology, and Community Education Specialist, Aging Research and Education Center, Department of Physiology. She was also Project Director, Positively Aging®, Middle and High School Curriculum in Gerontology, also in the Department of Physiology. In addition, she was Community Liaison at the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies.

She also lectured and developed courses in the areas of Adult Education and Gerontology at the University of the Incarnate Word.

Carolyn and her husband, Thomas Marshall, enjoyed several hobbies, including archaeology, weaving, and photography. They traveled a great deal, and particularly enjoyed their camping and hiking trips.

She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Thomas Marshall; and her parents; as well as her beloved grandmother, Georgia Lucille Williamson Rowley; and her aunt and uncle, Darice Rowley Heath and Everett Heath. She is survived by her son, Shawn Marshall; daughter, Cynthia Marshall Kennedy; grandson, Joseph Emmett Kennedy; and sister-in-law, Mary Jo Wolff.

She rests from her labors and her works do follow her.
