William Joel Garrett
April 23, 1925 - April 10, 2021

William Joel Garrett, 95 years, passed from this life to the arms of God on Saturday, April 10, 2021. Betty Ann Garrett, his wife and sweetheart, attended Bill and was by his side for 73 years.

Bill was born to B.J. and Annie Garrett on April 23, 1925 in Mineral Wells, Texas. He was the youngest child of seven brothers and one sister. His siblings afforded Bill as a teenager with many adventures in life such as leading singing for his brother Leroy’s tent revivals across Texas. He always said, “That’s where I learned to love fried chicken!” His life-long love of singing hymns and attending church services, no doubt, had roots early in life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and one sister. Bill is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughter, Annie Paul of Dallas; his grandsons, Jay Paul of Dallas; Bryan Paul of Austin; Jed Paul of San Marcos; Clay Paul of San Antonio. He also was a great-grandfather to nine young children.

His brother, Ray, introduced Bill to Texas A & M University, class of 1947. He also graduated from Southern Methodist University as well as having attended Abilene Christian College. In adulthood, he enjoyed serving as President of the Dallas Aggie Club. Bill wore many hats in his lifetime. He especially loved Bible study, having spent many years studying the Holy Spirit and teaching at many churches including Preston Road Church of Christ, Prestoncrest Church of Christ, and A&M Church of Christ. He was a developer of projects around Texas such as apartment buildings, housing subdivisions and restaurants. He was an MAI appraiser which took him from every intersection in North Texas to the ranches of Santa Fe.

In retirement he authored True to Each Other, a book telling the stories of wartime Aggies. His book was dedicated to the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University. He was a member of the Preston Road Church of Christ where he enjoyed a men’s prayer group weekly during his senior years. His graveside services were held at the Fox Cemetery, a rural family site near Ola, Texas dating to the 1700s.

Until we meet again, “Be still and know that I am God.”
