Sandie Patterson Bennett
July 3, 1961 ~ August 28, 2020
Sandie Bennett, 59, of College Station, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2020, in Bryan. Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers, Bryan-College Station.
A memorial service will be held on September 9th at 1:00pm at A&M United Methodist Church in College Station, Texas. All are welcome, however “a Mask is Required”.
Sandie was born at the Marine Corps Base in Camp Lejune, Jacksonville, North Carolina, to Bettye Clements Patterson and Ralph E. Patterson. Born very premature, the military hospital saved her life.
In 1982 while attending Texas A&M University, she met Jon P. Bennett, the Love of Her Life. They fell deeply in love and married January 22, 1983. Jon often told her “He loved her more than she would ever know”, each time she replied “Ditto”.
Sandie received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in BANA-Business Analysis from Texas A&M University in December of 1983. She used her statistical programming skills while working at the Texas Transportation Institute. She spent many happy years with TTI.
Sandie was a devoted and committed wife and mother. She never missed any event her sons were involved in. Sandie and Jon traveled many miles, rain or shine, to watch their boy’s academic and athletic events. She volunteered to work countless activities and substitute teaching opportunities benefitting her boys as well as numerous other children.
Sandie joined Jon with activities in the Boy Scouts of America. She played an instrumental supporting role empowering Josh and Zach to work their way through the Boy Scout program from Cub scout to the rank of Eagle Scout. She volunteered in numerous Arrowmoon District scouting activities benefiting hundreds of Scouting youth and parents.
For decades, Sandie has maintained a strong commitment to God and the church. If the doors were open, she was there! Church Sunday and Wednesday services, Sunday School classes, special musical activities, bible studies, church pool parties, feeding the youth during their Sunday night MYF gatherings, the list goes on. She trained and became a Stephen Minister, serving as a confidential support person for people experiencing life’s difficulties.
Sandie coordinated and led numerous semesters of the Dave Ramsey “Financial Peace University “ classes at A&M United Methodist Church. She developed strong friendships with countless students in this program, training them in money management and budget planning skills and listening to them as they worked through their individual situations.
She helped Jon with his special project with the local BVCOG and the GED program. She found great value in it so much so that she engaged with this opportunity to teach the skills in the GED program. One of her favorite stories was the grandmother wanting to learn the skills to get her GED so she could teach her grandson to read and write.
Sandie was a contributing member of the Bryan College Station Newcomers Club. She enjoyed the friendships developed there and had a great time with this group.
Sandie recently joined the local “Pink Alliance” breast cancer survivors group. She really enjoyed this group of women and what they stood for. She found great comfort with this group of women.
Sandie worked hard this past year to successfully overcome breast cancer with the help of Doctor Fleener and the all of the nurses at the Bryan Cancer Clinic, Bryan Cancer Center, and M.D. Anderson Houston. She “robustly rang the bell” signaling success over this harsh disease July 16, 2020. Her tiny body was weakened by the cancer and was very vulnerable when she came in contact with the nasty COVID-19 disease. The day after ringing the bell she entered St. Joseph Hospital- Bryan, where, with the help of an outstanding nursing staff, she worked to successfully overcome the corona virus. Despite this victory, the virus had severely damaged her vital organs and after 43 days her body succumbed to the damage.
Sandie is preceded in death by her father Ralph E. Patterson.
She is survived by her mother, Bettye Clements; brothers, Ralph Patterson and Scott Patterson. Her Husband, Jon P. Bennett; sons, Joshua Bennett and Zachary Bennett, along with Zachary’s wife, Amelia Bennett.
